Cozumel, Mexico - Lonely Beach by Jonathan Bartlett

One of the “Shore Excursions” that my family and I did while on our cruise were speedboats, in Cozumel, Mexico. We, along with about 4 other people, got in these small speedboats and rode around over the ocean and then headed to this beach.

The cool thing about this beach is that it’s totally secluded. The only visitors it gets are from the speedboat excursions. (Probably 30-50 people per day?) Not too bad!

Most of the others were enjoying the water, but I wanted to take pictures.

This is an HDR image. I took three bracketed images, and then merged them in Photomatix Pro and adjusted. I then saved and opened into Photoshop and did some minor detailing and saved a high resolution photo.

Photo was taken with a Canon 5D MkII and a rented 16-35mm f/2.8L USM Lens.

Enjoy!

Fabulous clouds. Love the look of barren untouched land.

  • Thanks so much Pam! It really was untouched. Incredible!

Outstanding work with that great ultra-wide lens, Jonathan! Nice attention to the horizon line. It’s a gorgeous view!

  • Thank you very much. Rented that 16-35 specifically for the cruise. I don’t have an actual wide angle lens for my 5D yet… Hoping to get that 16-35 soon.

Little distortion, but I think it adds some life to the picture and sucks you in.
    Thanks for the comment!

If I could make a suggestion, the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L is an affordable alternative, if the 16-35mm stretches the budget a bit too tightly. My 17-40mm has served me extremely well, especially for about half the price. No question, the 16-35mm is superior. It’s faster and slightly wider, but it’s a tough call to determine if that’s truly worth double the price. If cost was “no object”, that would be a different story to me. Unfortunately, I’m forced to look at the cost/performance ratio very closely, myself. Some pros have actually found the 17-40mm to be just a tad sharper. They’re both fantastic lenses, though.

    …just a friendly thought.

  • Thanks Gene.
I’ve definitely looked over all my options for a good wide angle lens for my 5D. Including 3rd party lenses, ie Sigma. Money is part of the process, but I can also afford to wait if I absolutely have to. So it basically comes down to the 16-35 and the 17-40, and is just a matter of… preference? I guess when I decide to pull the trigger. I’ve heard nothing but good things about both lenses, which doesn’t help the decision process at all.

Thanks for the thought. If I ever get one, I’ll let you know what I ended up going with!

Amazing DOF on this beautiful beach scene.

  • Thanks! I loved the lens I was renting. I was going for the somewhat skewed look, hoping it would pull people into it.
