Hi I’m Ben Ruskin. I have been drawing seriously for around a year as I am now settled in Melbourne and want to concentrate on my work. I am largely self-taught though have an 8 week life tutored class under my belt which ‘freed’ me up. I have really enjoyed myself so far, finding a path to follow and develop an artists eye. I am concentrating on my drawings at the moment because that’s where my passion lies but would like to paint at some stage in the future.
I love the freedom and energy that charcoal allows to portray when used aggressively for large scale life drawing. The not-finished-line-look asks the viewer to complete the picture. Backgrounds are secondary and sparse in my drawings and only used as immediate prop to the model.
In the process of producing these drawings I have come to realise that art has a spiritual dimension that cannot be taught. The whole “how did I DO that” question that pops into your head. I can only offer this, that there is one creator God who imparts in us the desire to create and that our portrayal of creation is how we perceive Him in our lives.
