Style should be like a coat you put on when you want to … but it should never become a strait jacket you can’t escape from (Dave Edwards – 20th January 2008).

STYLE

Ah, that is so very true. I see so many artist’s who seem to cling to their styles so much, that it makes them not experiment with other things anymore. It’s nice if you have a style you can use, but you should never be confined to just that one style. =)

Great statement Dave, i’m finally wriggling out of my strait jacket & forcing myself to experiment with new things, & it really is giving me a sense of freedom

Putting on the Style! I can see you being quoted forever more Dave with such words of wisdom. I certainly agree with you in that in art we shouldn’t put self-inflicted restriction on ourselves. But doesn’t style come in two flavours; the one which comes naturally to us (a bit like handwriting) and those styles we adopt by choice. I’ve been trying for a long time to change my natural style and find it’s a bit lke trying to rid oneself of a persistant piece of sticky tape, or in this case, a coat too tight to remove.

And it should evolve over time. Great writing, Dave.

I am actually referring to chosen styles Brian. Changing natural style would be a little like changing your handwriting or your fingerprints.

    very clever!
    i like!
esp considering my styles are many and all over the place… :)
i remember once when i was at school, I handed a handwritten assignment in, and of course the handwriting styles were all different as i tend to change how i write and this assignment took a few days to complete…anyhow, when I handed it in I was accused of cheating, because of the different handwriting styles, when i defended myself by explaining that i literally had about 50 different styles, the teacher then accused me of lying, and cheating, and i was givien detention where i would have to write one hundred lines reading “i will not cheat or lie in the future”....
Apparantly the teacher believed it was impossible for any one person to have more than 5 different writing styles (huh? silly wench)
So, come later that day and I’m in detention writing my lines and I decided to stick it up her and i wrote each line in a distinctively different style, right in front of her, and then i got up and handed it to her, and while her jaw was still on the ground, i said to her “well, shows what you know!” and walked out! Silly teachers…
i still laugh about that to this day… :)
after that day, that particular teacher was too embarrassed to look me in the eye…

After experiencing first hand how unjust some teachers can be at times, it was refreshing to read of how you put that one in her place without being cheeky to her … well done Jodi :))
