Strange thing to say, but I find this drawing a bit disturbing and I’m not even sure if I like it myself ☺
After admiring the work of Catherine Walker and Chris Hinson (both of whom draw entirely from memory or imagination) I tried doing a drawing with no external points of reference and this is what came out.
A very col stylized drawing here. Love the treatment of that tree! There is so much in here and so much going on. I think it is a wonderful drawing filled with questions. You say it disturbs you, I recently had that happen with a piece I did and posted and I recieved overwhelmingly positive feedback. Took me a bit to uncover what was hidden in there. Two suggestions: Write a story or poem about it (or post and ask someone to try.) Write a statement from every element n the drawing, like be one at a time each thing; the tree’s POV, the man, the stripes, the brain etc. can be very revealing. Good Luck Dave.
Dave, I wish i could interpret dreams and drawings. This would really be an interesting one to ponder. I enjoyed looking at it. It seems a lot more in this picture than what you usually do…. it’ fun to try new things, don’t be afraid to spread your wings, you never know where you might end up! What a wonderful gift you have!!!
Thanks Barb. I usually adapt images I can see, either in life or in photos. For this I forced myself to work 100% from imagination. I still feel more comfortable using reference pints, but I might try anotehr as this has been so well received – even by people I’d never heard of before, so it’s not just my friends being kind.
Congratulations on your feature for a very fine piece of imagination, Dave! Lovely to see you posting up new work.
Thanks April. I’m very preoccupied at present updating my family history files – hard work too. I’ll be doing more art soon though, but I had to do this one before people forgot me.
