FEATURED BY THE DECORATIVE AND TRADITIONAL ART GROUP – 9th May 2011

FEATURED BY THE FANTASY ART GROUP – 15th May 2011

PLEASE VIEW LARGE

I have recently been studying some of my old drawings and paintings and incorporating some of the techniques I have tried out over the past few decades.

The herring-bone pattern in the background of this picture is taken from the portrait of Gustave Dore I have in my portraits collection.

When I saw an old photo belonging to Barbara Callahan of Redbubble I asked her permission to base a drawing on it and she didn’t hesitate to say yes I could, so thanks Barb.

I used a 0.35mm Rotring Isograph pen and some coloured pencils to create this fantasy picture. The original photo of a lady on an ostrich is real, but Barb isn’t sure who the subject is, so calls her Lucille.

Here is Barbara’s original photograph.

I am a retired man who enjoys expressing himself in pencils and paints. I have had two solo exhibitions in my home town and I love Redbubble. I get as much pleasure from viewing the works of other artists as from creating my own.

One of your coolest, Dave…love the fanciful colors that flow from her clothing to the bird. Great background, too.

  • Many thanks Cindy. I spent ages on the herring-bone background, but it can’t really be seen here unless viewed large. I chose similar colours so it would seem almost as if the ostrich was part of her.

Yeah Dave, this is cool. Has an almost Pop Surrealism feel to it. I bet it did take you forever to do that background though!

  • Thanks Tammy. I enjoyed doing the background. Backgrounds have always been a problem for me since I started doing whimsical artwork, but I am starting to get a few ideas by examining some of my old artworks.

Wow Dave I love this- I like the vintage feel and the intricate background- its almost like a tapestry effect. Wonderful all round !! x

  • I think it might be the herring-bone pattern that gives this a tapestry feel. Nice comment – many thanks.
