230 - THE MODDEY DHOO OF PEEL CASTLE - DAVE EDWARDS - INK - 2011 by

The Moddey Dhoo is a ghost dog that haunts Peel castle on the Isle of Man. I decided to do this drawing in pen and ink for a change. The subject was suggested by my Manx friend Peter Tucker

In the Isle of Man it is styled Mauthe Dhoog, or Moddey Dhoo (black dog in Manx). It is said to haunt the environs of Peel Castle. People believe that anyone who sees the dog will die soon after the encounter with the dog. It is mentioned by Sir Walter Scott in The Lay of the Last Minstrel:

“For he was speechless, ghastly, wan
Like him of whom the Story ran
Who spoke the spectre hound in Man.”

Such a powerful drawing, so much emotion. The Ghost Dog looks so sad & alone. Sensational on the details

  • Thanks Lisa – just thought I’d try something different and Peter, who took us to Peel Castle, suggested I do a drawing based on the ghost dog.

Love this Dave. I love all the ghost legends attached to castles, its a wonderful concept for a piece of work or a book of ghost stories. Awesome inking :)

  • Thanks Anita – next one will be a colour drawing.

Quite stunning, Dave! It really just grabs you. :)

  • I’m so glad you think that. As I was drawing it I wondered how others would see it. Thank you Luke.

Excellent work my friend, love the coloured eyes …

  • Although it is a black and white drawing I made the decision to colour the eyes red, as the legend says the dog had red eyes and I could think of no other way of showing that :)

I’ve heard of the ghost dog of Manx, I think I read about it in a book called an historical guide to Albion.
    Amazing work Dave.

  • Peter Tucker drove us to the castle and showed me the room where the dog was allegedly seen. Thanks for liking my work John – I really appreciate that.

How gorgeous. My grandfather used ot tell me stories about these. I thought they were so interesting. Great work.

  • Thank you Bunny. I love old legends like this myself. I enjoyed doing this, but I fancy doing something colourful for my next one. I like changing styles occasionally and pen and inks are one of my favourite ways of drawing.
