179 - HIGH FERRY, BLYTH - DAVE EDWARDS - INK 1990by BLYTHART
In the days when I sold prints of my pen and ink work, this sold 1,000 prints, of which 90 were framed and mounted, or logically speaking, mounted then framed :)
It was the most popular drawing I ever did. For almost twenty years I have mused over whether it sold so well because the view had nostalgic value to the purchasers, or whether any artistic merit entered into the the equation. By uploading it onto Redbubble I may soon have a better idea, because none of you will be familiar with this view and will hopefully judge it on its merit as a drawing.
Chris Baker of Redbubble has sent me this link to another view of the ferry .. many thanks Chris :)

Dave, brillant work my friend, i don’t know how you achieve this with ink.Bev
Thanks. The answer to your questions is: “laboriously, over a period of twelve hours” :) In 1990, one lady, not content with a print, asked to buy my original, but as I didn’t sell originals I drew the whole picture all over again and actually got it almost identical. She was happy anyway.

Must mention that this is a poor copy – I will shortly be uploading a better one. The answer to your question is “Laboriously – over a period of twelve hours.” In 1990, I sold prints of this drawing and one lady, not content with a print, wanted to buy the original. I wouldn’t part with it, so she asked if I would draw it again. I did and it was fairly identical and she was happy with it.
By the way, I can remember travelling on this as a lad, but it’s long gone now.
well….I would say it sold on the skill and talent of the artist! :-D …it is an amazing drawing…the detail, with its lines, angles, depth, and shadows, is definitely eye catching Dave. Skillfully executed indeed!
Well that’s almost to much for me at the moment Dave but thanx! Of course I don’t look that way but I must say I see some interesting things in your works (lotsss ss of creativity and certain ways you handle your creative instruments) which aren’t present in many other styles/works… What I mean to say is that the power of creation might be even more interesting to me then just skills. The latter we can study, improve and flourish, but the first has to be one of a youthful and broad mind… …I once knew a good looking woman which was very skilled on the piano; I had so much respect she could play parts from Strauss, Bach and others without missing a note and really tight… She once started crying and expressed herself to me that she often feeled unlucky because she thought she mostly didn’t got ideas to compose something of her own… It was a strange moment and I had a difficult time comforting her…
“… a youthful and broad mind” …. I am young at heart … does that count?
All I can say, Dave, is “WOW, what skill!”, my friend. Great skill plus incredible patience! And a very steady hand. Your perspective is top-notch. A beautiful piece, Dave! (And, yes, young at heart does count!)
Thanks Pat, but you do realise I used a drawing board to achieve the straight lines. My hand isn’t too steady.
Hehe yeah forgot to meantion that Dave! But the first two doesn’t have anything to do with age! I’ve a grandma of 80 who might still be in her ’30s hehe. Her sister even went to a houseparty when she was over 80…. So heart/mind yeah!

Great drawing Dave! Like your technique with ink.
From an artist of your high ability I take that as a valuable compliment indeed.

This is excellent Dave, you have achieved a great deal of realism and the detail is quite amazing. Super work …
Thanks my friend. I still am determined that when I next visit Edinburgh you and I will have tea and scones together … or a pint of beer :)
