07 - COWPEN QUAY IN THE 1970s - DAVE EDWARDS - PHOTOMONTAGE AND INK - 1995 by

Another collage from 1995. I enjoyed playing with bits of paper and glue, except in this case these were actual photos that I took myself and even developed and printed myself. I even drew the design in the background, so this is entirely home-produce with no copyright worries over the photos either.

    Nice work Dave …

  • The area has been modernised since I took these photos, so I suppose this now constitutes a historical document.

I like the photos too, in that they give a bit of insight into british suburban life. Although they look to be vintage.

Got any more interesting old photos like these?

  • You will wish you had never uttered those words my friend. One of my hobbies is local history and I have hundreds of old images of Blyth and district as it was and as it is now for comparison. Is your computer working well enough now to be able to receive some images via email? Don’t panic though … I will send you selected ones, not hundreds :)

It’s still ill Dave, but the images are only just decent enough to view on our screen. You could always upload some to Blythphotos, then everyone would be able to take a look.

  • I did not take them myself, as they are really old (yeah, even older than me), so I’d rather not risk anyone recognising one as being copyrighted to them. Over here the law is that the photographer has to be dead fifty years before the work becomes public domain. Some of our local historians view Redbubble occasionally and are red hot on copyright. When your computer recovers, remind me and I will send you some )

I didn’t know you did your own developing Dave. That sounds like something from the dark (room) days of photography which I never got around to. The computer system for collage I guess has brought the old art form back to life and the old saying ‘The camera never lies’ is no longer true. I’m trying to locate some of the scenes in your picture. We still shop at Shy’s.

  • I’ll not mention what Shy’s original name was :)

Yes, I worked at Turners Photographic in Pink Lane for one year when I was twenty and bought my own enlarger, etc. and used my bedroom as a darkroom with hardboard pushed against the windows.

Kids have always done collages in schools using other people’s images and generally have never had any problems. However, one year a local school was prosecuted for printing out a few Christmas carols for a parents’ service. The teacher who did the deed was left holding the can by the Education Authority and after that warnings were placed next to copying machines in schools. The problem is we, in all innocence, feel we are doing nothing wrong in ‘playing about’ with old photos and publications. Many products carry clear warnings that copying or storing of any image or text is not allowed. I tend to play safe and do not upload any of my computer montages into the public domain.

  • I am going to be more careful in future also.

  • P.S. … of course, this is all my own work, so they can’t touch me on this :)
