244 - STYLISED ST. MARY'S ISLAND, WHITLEY BAY - DAVE EDWARDS - ACRYLIC - 2009 by

As some of you may have gathered, I am going through an experimental stage at present, trying new things … well, new for me anyway :)

This is an acrylic painting I just completed today. I plan to do more acrylic painting in the near future. I also plan a few more coloured pencil pictures soon.

I am a retired man who enjoys expressing himself in pencils and paints. I have had two solo exhibitions in my home town and I love Redbubble. I get as much pleasure from viewing the works of other artists as from creating my own.

this is excellent! the color is fabulous the composition is perfect! and its got ur style all over it! just fantastic!

  • Thanks Helene …. I’ve still got a lot to learn with acrylics though … I don’t have an acrylic palette, so I have been mainly using the paint undiluted. I find it difficult to control; a bit like a blob of jelly on a cocktail stick :) I have spent so much money recently on acrylic paints and canvases though that I have committed myself now to go ahead. Any advice you (or anyone else for that matter) care to email me will be appreciated.

well as you already may know, u can use them like watercolors…but u have to work fast…i use them thick and as is…water them down for certain things like maybe shadowing all depends…i think u did a wonderful job!

Good on ya for trying something new Dave. Bold and colourful with a fair bit of texture in this one. Of all the mediums I’ve used I found acrylics most difficult to control – dries too fast for me and tends to punish brushes – but some people don’t have my problem (like Jim Davison) and produce great works. I think you’re going to enjoy the change of paint and technique.

  • I’m not too happy with it, but at least I have managed to take a better photo of it now and I’ve aded it above.

    Looks great for first attempt!!
I’ve used acrylic since the 70s. I’ll email you on a palette using stuff from the kitchen.
    Cheers Neil

  • I suppose it would be okay for a first attempt, but it’s not a first attempt. When I said trying new things, I meant trying a landscape in acrylic and limiting the bendiness (although I did add a sneaky pattern to the causeway). I did two acrylics about twenty years ago and didn’t enjoy the experience. I recently did an acrylic butterfly

Just thought I’d clear that up in casepeople thought I was saying this was a first attempt … just looks like one :(
