183 - TWO HENS - DAVE EDWARDS - GOUACHE - 2007
These two hens belong to my in-laws, so I guess that makes me a relative of these feathery creatures :)) I used gouache by the way.

Hi Dave, love these two hens. We have chickens in our own backyard, so I like those animals and the way you put them is lovely.
Love your gouachework, by the way. I have purchased some gouache tubes also, because we use it at Thangka-paintings (Tibetan Buddhist iconography) in a very transparant way. Maybe I will use it for my mandalas some time in the future… Love the many possible different ways of working with this medium.
Greetings from Holland, Angelique

I sometimes apply watercolour in a series of layers and that often makes it resemble gouache. I haven’t tried using gouache thinly though… good idea … thanks :)

Good work. Love the rich textures and colours.

When using gouache in a very transparant way, you must use lots of water and just a little pigment of the paint. How supprising the results, but you must have much patience to bild up the layers and dip your pencil with paper every time to really use that thin pigment and not only that bulk of water… Really a special technic that Thangka-painting… at least according to the tradition I learn…

FANTASTIC ,, never heard or used this medium you all are talking about,, could you explain better too me,, this has so much dimension, so I am guessing this technique does just that,, the detail in feathers is fabulous,, and background so much depth,, love this one Dave,, peace linmarie

Okay – I’ll try :) With watercolour and acrylics you can work with layers, as the colour shows through (unless you mix white into it) but with gouache, the underneath colour doesn’t show through. This means that any mistakes can be painted over – it’s quite fun actually.
