165 - HODGSON’S MILL, BLYTH (2nd Version) - (WATERCOLOUR)

Over a hundred years ago, Blyth had a lot of windmills. I did this stylised one from a black and white photo of a 19th century pencil drawing. I like working like that – it gives my imagination plenty to play with.

Penny – I used watercolours. May I mention that all of my work is just A4 sized. It all started when I bought a display book. I keep all my pictures in display books. I think I must be a frustrated illustrator. Some of my pen and ink scenic pics have been used in magazines, but as it was a small venture I only received complimentary copies of the books. I’ve sold 6,500 prints of assorted pen and ink scenes in my town since 1989, but i haven’t sold any colour work. I am not allowed to sell now because I receive a state benefit for ill health and can’t earn anything or I’ll be penalised. I’m still learning how to do colour work, so feel free, all of you, to offer tips.

I don’t think you need any help with color – or colour! You have a unique style that is perfect for book illustrations. When my children were small I only bought them books with good illustrations – and of course good stories too – although they didn’t necessarily go together. Yours would have passed my exacting standards.

Not sure that you need more tips. Seems fine to me. It’s a picture of good things, interesting things, around the corner. Could never handle water colours too well. I love messing around with oil paint.

its amazing work,it would be easier for you to do it as you see it,,but your own style its got to be harder to do,to me its like a photo that you take and then have to manipulate to the style of your choice,,,but all the curves have to go with each other ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,o i will shut up

The warping, the colour, shading and perspective all make for a brilliant picture! A4! fine work :)

  • BLYTHART replied

Thanks … I’m not sure what A4 means, but coincidentally that was the size of paper I used for this painting.

  • Heidi Garner

    Heidi Garner

Yep, I saw, thats what I meant. A4 is not that big…..a lot of detail went into that size.

  • BLYTHART replied

I think I must be scared of doing big pictures :)) I have done 205 paintings and only four of them were bigger than A4. I think my problem is that if I did large pictures, I’d have nowhere to hang them and they would end up gathering dust in a heap in the attic. With A4 I can store them in display books. I think I’d rather be an illustrator than a painter of large canvases; probably comes from our family’s love of books.

If thats what you enjoy and you’re content with it, why change. If you feel the need for a challenge or a change, then you know its time to try something new. :)

Great work Dave, the perspective and colour have an energy and vitality about them. It screams of history, the past, the working man. Congratulations on selling so many prints too, a real achievement ~ Anni :)

  • BLYTHART replied 27 days ago

Thanks Anni. Yes, Blyth in the olden days was very industrial, with collieries and a shipyard.
