171 - MAO (WATERCOLOUR)

Not the Chinese dictator, but our lovely cat Mao :-)

Here is the photo I took for reference – I am sure you’ll agree I didn’t just do a straight copy. The background is from my imagination by the way.

As this seems popular I have decided to offer cards of it for sale. I have also uploaded a better scan.

As of 7th September 2009, this picture has been Featured five times, favourited sixty-one times and received 1,250 viewings … thanks everyone

  • Craig Goldsmith

    Craig Goldsmith

Very nice, I hope you take this as a compliment but it looks like a great cover for a childrens book, you just need a story to go with it. (Perhaps the writers could help ?)

  • BLYTHART

    BLYTHART

I was amazed that Craig said that. Craig – I sure do take that as a compliment – my ambition is to be a book illustrator, even though I am now 57 (it’s never too late to learn). Years ago, someone used a few of my local scenic pen and inks in a magazine (a small local one) and it made me wish I could illustrate books. Last week, an American friend of ours said that after seeing my Mao painting she’d like me to illustrate a book she is writing. I haven’t decided yet, as it seems a big thing to take on, but Craig has given me much food for thought …

  • mrana

    mrana

Go for it! I’d love to illustrate books and would jump at the chance :) Having said that I guess there would be a lot to take into consideration but it’s still wonderful and I think you well deserve having being asked, your illustrations are perfect for it.

wonderful work Dave, I love ginger tabbies! Had one years ago, and he was a real character…..

  • BLYTHART replied

Thanks Barb … our Mao is a character too. We have had four black and white cats over the years, but our daughter decided to buy this ginger tom and he has taken over the house. He sits in the kitchen sink waiting for a drink of water, bites my wife if she sings, drags dead birds through the cat flap and leaves cat hairs all over the carpet … but we adore him :))

  • Barb Leopold replied

OMG!!! This cat has serious character!! I’d be in trouble too as I like to walk around singing ….. out of key ….. he would be after me in a flash …..!!!

  • JanG

    JanG

Sounds like Mao is a good children’s book himself, just waiting to be written! Love the cat, the colors, the lines, and just wonder what he’s looking at.

  • kcranmer

    kcranmer

Being owned by 4 felines, I absolutely love this!

  • BLYTHART replied

My wife and I are unpaid servants to Mao. He is an assertive little cat and ensures he gets treated with the utmost respect by gently biting us occasionally … but he always licks us both before and after biting :))

  • Ine Spee

    Ine Spee

This is a lovely drawing! The cat has so much character; love the colour and the way the stripes run over his body. Plus he fits nicely with the background, especially the nice contrast between his orange fur and the bright blue sky.
And if that plan is still there to illustrate a children’s book, I think you should go for it! =D

  • BLYTHART replied

Thank you Eenuh. After seeing your fantastic Alice In Wonderland illustration I think YOU should DEFINITELY become a book illustrator. If anyone else is reading this, go and have a look at Eenuh’s work .. well worth seeing.

  • Ine Spee

    Ine Spee

Aww, thank you Dave! I’m glad you like that illustration. And yes, my actual goal in life is to become a children’s book illustration. So I’m working very hard now in college to hopefully be able to reach that goal in a couple of years. =D
Still, you should illustrate a book yourself, this style is really suited for it. =)

I wish I shared your confidence in my ability. By Redbubble standards I am fairly low down in the talent rating, but I am trying harder every day and will get there one day. I am pleased to have the opportunity to converse with such good artists and photographers and to learn from them.

love the pattern, colours and the whole concept….looks like a knitted jumper….can you knit? :)

  • BLYTHART replied

My wife once persuaded me to try knitting a scarf for our daughter’s doll. It ended up about 15cm wide at one end and 5cm at the other, so in short, the answer to your query is, “apparently not” :))

  • artlein

    artlein

I really like the way you have painted your cat… even without reading what you said about him, he stands out as a real character!

  • BLYTHART replied

He is a dignified cat who won’t be messed with. We now have a kitten called Mitch. We keep them apart until Mitch is bigger and stronger, because he has a fascination for Mao’s lovely long tail and Mao will not tolerate anyone touching his beloved tail. Last night we were calling Mao in from the garden and Mitch was calling “Mao, Mao” ... it’s the sort of name a cat can easily pronounce :)) For threcord … it’s pronounced Mow (to rhyme with cow) and not may-oh (liek county Mayo) as some people think.

    Lisa Marie Rob...

Thanks for bubble mailing me the link to this… I must have spent a good 15-20 minutes just looking at all the shapes and patterns you’ve used to create the grass etc. It reminds me a lot of quilting or patchwork and I agree with a few others on here… I can definitely see this on a children’s book cover! It’s wonderful!

  • BLYTHART replied

I have definitely been influenced by patchwork, stained glass and mosaic. Patchwork quilts remind me of my grandmoher’s home in Wales when I was a seven-year-old child. My father was a preacher, so I saw lots of stained glass and mosaic is simply fascinating.
