30 - DERELICTION - WATERCOLOUR - 1978

I did this when I was slightly less than half the age I am now. I thought maybe someone somewhere might enjoy a peep at it.

Beautiful color and pattern, Dave. It’s an interesting step on the way to your current style.

I would love to say that my art development had run a smooth path from 1974 to the present day, Patricia, but for example, whilst I did a fair few drawings, between the years of 1974 and 2002, I only produced 70 paintings, which averages two or three a year. In 2003 I produced 39 paintings, yet in 2004 I only did four. Very spasmodic. I once went two years without doing any art at all … that was when I’d convinced myself I couldn’t draw properly (still not 100% sure) ... despite having by then sold 5,000 prints of my assorted scenic ink drawings. So you see … I have serious confidence issues. Brian Towers and Walt Evans (both on Redbubble) managed to talk some sense into me recently though, so I am now back to producing pictures regularly.

Keeping the confidence level up is a hard thing to do. Somehow all of us have to get past those times and just keep doing what we do. We need to get to the point where we do it because we just can’t not do it. Very simple and lets the issue of confidence become less important.

I’m with Patricia here. We painters come in all shapes and egos, but I think few would not have off days and doubts about our abilities now and then. After years of success – as you’ve experienced – we can still have occasions when things don’t go right and we perhaps feel we are losing it or taking a backward step. It’s not a bad thing as it stops us getting complacent, or worse, self-opinionated. As long as we don’t give in to the negative times and give up we will keep trying and overcome the difficulties and enjoy the extra pleasures that brings. Wow! That sound a bit long-winded.

Thank you Lance. I feel I should have pursued this style of painting in 1978, but i have only recently caught up with it.

I love the tetris feel of this one.
There’s not one single painting of mine that I don’t get half way through and think: ‘Oh, I’ve really ruined it, no point in finishing it off’ and then I think ‘No, I’ve already spent lots of time on it, I should just do a bit more’ and then I push past the ugly stage and end up really happy with it. Even my favourite finished pieces I wanted to chuck out at one point!
I think if you never doubt your abilities as an artist from time to time, you’ll never challenge yourself and grow.
