201 - THE LIGHTHOUSE, BLYTH - COLOURED PENCILS - 2008

My hometown isn’t the most picturesque of places, but it does have a lighthouse that was built in the 18th century. The river was made deeper and narrower over the years and so the lighthouse is now inland. I have painted and drawn it before (as has L.S. Lowry) but decided to liven it up a little in this whimsically bent coloured pencil depiction of it.

Here is a more conventional drawing I did of the same lighthouse:

After those many drawing of building you did a while ago with so many straight lines I guess you’re having an unconstrained fling and greatly enjoying it. Hardly a straight line in sight and lots of colour. It feels like being wrapped in blue bubble wrap – make it red bubble next time huh?

I think you’re having too much of that strong northern beer. Joking aside congratulations for being featured

  • BLYTHART replied

Do you not get bendy buildings and blue bubbles in the sky where you live? This is a different part of England … you need a visa to visit us :)

  • Deborah Holman replied

Everything is very very straight in London. There is a more gentle curl in Somerset from whence I hail. As for the sky, it can be anything you want, after all Constable nicked the Hampstead skies and put them in his Suffolk landscapes!

  • BLYTHART replied

If only the people in my hometown liked my work as much as you people seem to …. I don’t have a very “English” style (I am half Welsh, so that’s my excuse) and my work is not traditional. Thank you sincerely for your lovely comments on my work today.

There is a sort of “Van Goghish” feel to this:)

  • BLYTHART replied

You’ve made my day … a few people have described some of my work as Van Goghish. I really admire Van Gogh and although I don’t consciously copy him, he’s always at the back of my mind. Anotehr artist whose work I admire is Wanda Gag (pronounced Gog). Take a look (please) at this picture by her and you’ll see some delightfully bent lines and a hint of Van Gogh too. She died before even I was born and I just discovered her work last week.
