214 - STONE HEAD - INK - 2007

When I was visiting relatives in Wrexham (North Wales), I spotted a stone head on the lawn near the library. It was decorated with mosaic. As I try not to plagiarise, I decided to draw the outline of the head and then draw it as though it was built with stones, sort of dry-wall style. As of September 2009 this has been favourited 37 times and featured 4 tiems, so I guess someone out there likes it :)
I am now offering this for sale as view cards.
Here is the photo I used for this drawing (I took it myself so there are no copyright issues) and I ask you to consider whether I do straight copies or, as I believe, I add some of my own style to the finished picture.

Great work, Dave. I love the lines and pattern radiating out from the head. No one draws better than you do.
madvlad
fine drawing so well done, you missed you vocation by a hundred and twenty years drawing for news papers in the 1880,s or around that time in history masterfully drawn
Lance Leopold
You have done a fantastic job,Dave!!
Martin Derksema
Psychedellic stuf, Dave. It moves and crawls into my brain. The highlights on the stones make the mask so vivid. Love the great white spot in the middle. The pattern on the ground is absolutely mind blowing.
Firedrake
Fantastic patterns!!
Woodie
Great interpretation Dave.
MaryO
A fantastic fantasy.
andrea verstegen
Very monumental. Striking composition. Congrats on a fine piece of work.

With so many on my watchlist, i almost missed this one Dave. You’ve a very inventive mind and always manage to produce thought-provoking art. This looks very much a mix of humour and threat, but then I always feel there is a message in your work which is as much it’s attraction as the skilled drawing. Sorry to be long-winded.
ElegantSavage
You have a really strong style…love the way you’ve done this…he looks quite mischevious doesn’t he?

Magnificent Dave, love this, such wondrous detail, such a great face in stone
Andy Mercer
I still like this one Dave.. why don’t you approach the Henry Moore Scultptur eTrust to see if they will fund a 30ft sculptural version ?
Of course you probably won’t fit the criteria.. being as how you are over a certain age and all.. So they will probably say.. bla.. di.. bla..di.. bla..di… bla..di.. bla.. bla.. no.. but if you don’t try you will never know.
I wonder if Andy Goldsworthy or Antony Gormley would be interested in supporting it ?
BLYTHART replied
You are very kind Andy, but in all fairness, I have made no secret of the fact I based this on a photo I took of a sculpture in Wrexham.. I would like to think I had altered my version enough for it not to be a direct copy though.
treexnl
So great artwork …
Thanks again for your visit.
Have a good weekend!
Mui-Ling Teh
Cool. It kinda pops out more when seen from afar.
John R.P. Nyaid
Lovely details! It somehow reminds me of those Easter Island statues.
BLYTHART replied
I became aware of that as i was drawing it. It’s of a Welsh sculpture actually, well based on it anyway.
avalyn
Terrific drawing! I have to admit I had a surreal moment thinking I saw Homer Simpson looking at me. All your drawings have such a great extension into other realities. Good work.
peyote
very cool xXx
BLYTHART replied
Thanks :)
Teresa Schultz
This looks huge and intimidating. Powerful. And powerful work. Well done!
BLYTHART replied
Thanks … that was my intention. The original sculpture I was inspired by is in Wrexham and is the size of a small child.

Soxy Fleming
this is very good! that’s why it has been featured!
BLYTHART replied
Five minutes ago I decided to show the photo I used for reference. My way of working is to use the photo but not to copy directly from it. You decide whether I have adapted or copied straight. If you’d like to see my photos (this is one of my own) here is a link to my other Bubble, which is entirely photography.
Soxy Fleming
I don’t think it is a copy, just a reference, but I also don’t see anything wrong with copying from a photograph….there is still a lot of skill involved, and it can be far more convenient than copying from life.
When I was about 15 I did a pencil drawing from a portrait on the front of the national geographic. I was very pleased with the result which was quite recognisable….alas I doubt I still have the ability to do that. One day I really should hunt down that same cover (the drawing is lost)
BLYTHART replied
Here is an article I did on the subject … lots of people have contributed ideas … you might enjoy reading it … please. CLICK HERE
By the way … I envy you for being able to recall what you did when you were fifteen :P
Drawing is like riding a bicycle … try it again … you won’t fall off :)
Soxy Fleming
HHmmm, I fell off a bicycle really badly when I was 18…..
BLYTHART replied
Sorry to hear that … no lasting damage I hope? I can actually remember being eighteen :)
Soxy Fleming
well I got a better nose out of it than I had before…..
BLYTHART replied
.. oh dear :(
Soxy Fleming
it’s ok…look at georgiana…her nose is fine!
BLYTHART replied
Are you two sisters? I haven’t had a chance to see Georgiana’s work properly yet … or yours for that matter. Saturday is a busy day as I take our daughter for a drive and make meals, etc., but I won’t forget you both …. catcha later.

Thanks Geoff. Tristram Hillier (1905 – 1983) is one of my favourite artists. It’s not a common name – any relation of yours?

Not that I know of, but now I’m going to have to look him up!! thanks for your reply.. I really appreciate the fantasy and surrealists work.
