214 - STONE HEAD - INK - 2007

When I was visiting relatives in Wrexham (North Wales), I spotted a stone head on the lawn near the library. It was decorated with mosaic. As I try not to plagiarise, I decided to draw the outline of the head and then draw it as though it was built with stones, sort of dry-wall style. As of September 2009 this has been favourited 37 times and featured 4 tiems, so I guess someone out there likes it :)

I am now offering this for sale as view cards.

Here is the photo I used for this drawing (I took it myself so there are no copyright issues) and I ask you to consider whether I do straight copies or, as I believe, I add some of my own style to the finished picture.

With so many on my watchlist, i almost missed this one Dave. You’ve a very inventive mind and always manage to produce thought-provoking art. This looks very much a mix of humour and threat, but then I always feel there is a message in your work which is as much it’s attraction as the skilled drawing. Sorry to be long-winded.

  • Andy Mercer

    Andy Mercer

I still like this one Dave.. why don’t you approach the Henry Moore Scultptur eTrust to see if they will fund a 30ft sculptural version ?

Of course you probably won’t fit the criteria.. being as how you are over a certain age and all.. So they will probably say.. bla.. di.. bla..di.. bla..di… bla..di.. bla.. bla.. no.. but if you don’t try you will never know.

I wonder if Andy Goldsworthy or Antony Gormley would be interested in supporting it ?

  • BLYTHART replied

You are very kind Andy, but in all fairness, I have made no secret of the fact I based this on a photo I took of a sculpture in Wrexham.. I would like to think I had altered my version enough for it not to be a direct copy though.

Lovely details! It somehow reminds me of those Easter Island statues.

  • BLYTHART replied

I became aware of that as i was drawing it. It’s of a Welsh sculpture actually, well based on it anyway.

  • Soxy Fleming

    Soxy Fleming

this is very good! that’s why it has been featured!

  • BLYTHART replied

Five minutes ago I decided to show the photo I used for reference. My way of working is to use the photo but not to copy directly from it. You decide whether I have adapted or copied straight. If you’d like to see my photos (this is one of my own) here is a link to my other Bubble, which is entirely photography.

  • Soxy Fleming

    Soxy Fleming

I don’t think it is a copy, just a reference, but I also don’t see anything wrong with copying from a photograph….there is still a lot of skill involved, and it can be far more convenient than copying from life.
When I was about 15 I did a pencil drawing from a portrait on the front of the national geographic. I was very pleased with the result which was quite recognisable….alas I doubt I still have the ability to do that. One day I really should hunt down that same cover (the drawing is lost)

  • BLYTHART replied

Here is an article I did on the subject … lots of people have contributed ideas … you might enjoy reading it … please. CLICK HERE

By the way … I envy you for being able to recall what you did when you were fifteen :P

Drawing is like riding a bicycle … try it again … you won’t fall off :)

  • Soxy Fleming

    Soxy Fleming

HHmmm, I fell off a bicycle really badly when I was 18…..

  • BLYTHART replied

Sorry to hear that … no lasting damage I hope? I can actually remember being eighteen :)
