278 - PETER THE RABBIT - DAVE EDWARDS - COLOURED PENCILS & FINELINERS - 2009

Many artists like art to be serious and meaningful, which is fine by me, but hey, I think the world is big enough to have fun art as well as serious art.

This is based on a fluffy toy, but I changed the colours of his scarf, added stripes and gave him stripes too. I used coloured pencils and fineliner pens for this. Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit obviously influenced the manufacturers of this fluffy toy and I was probably think of him when I redesigned the scarf :)

And here is the esteemed model himself:

I think humour is an important aspect of art, (life as well)..

but then again i’m not a serious artist.

  • BLYTHART replied

Thanks. Art reflects life and life contains humour, so why not show it now and then.

  • Lynnette Shelley

    Lynnette Shelley

hey you are not the only “serious” artist to have some fun now and then. One of y web design clients, is a very “serious” traditional realist artist, and a little while ago she developed a book called “Avant Duck” in which famous paintings had their main subjects replaced….by a duck. each painting remake was done in the same side as the original. Check it out here

The artist’s name is Martha Mayer Erlebacher and here is her website where you can see all of her work

Anyway, I really like your piece, Dave

  • BLYTHART replied

Thanks … I like Martha’s work. Thanks for showing me it.

i like the humor of ur painting.. i were reminded of a Danish poem written by Peat Hein hwen i sarw ur intro..my English i werry bad , but i manniged to find it in English..
    THE ETERNAL TWINS

    Taking fun
    as simply fun
    and earnestness
    in earnest
    shows how thoroughly
    thou none
    of the two
    discernest.

  • BLYTHART replied

    Thanks Randi. Nice poem.

I love this one!! I can see this design in a book about “the stuffed bunny who wants to be real.”

  • BLYTHART replied

You owe Peter an apology for saying he isn’t real … nobody had told him that yet and we were keeping it a secret from him :)

  • Kim Magee

I reckon I’m serious enough and I’d get annoyed if you didn’t upload pictures like this. Great work, pretty mad.

  • BLYTHART replied

Thanks. With a name like Yellow Fury I wouldn’t want you to get mad, so I’d better do some more like this some time :)

  • theyellowfury

    theyellowfury

Don’t worry. Its a conjunctive fury, ie furiously happy or furiously placid.

  • BLYTHART replied

Placid fury – I like that :) By the way, Peter gets confused and he’s just told me he rather likes that Yellow Furry person because he is furry too … oh dear … I must explain … see ya :)

  • Mui-Ling Teh

    Mui-Ling Teh

This is awesome Dave, the roundness of trhe lines on Peter Rabbit is just right to define the shape of his body.

It’s funny that this is based on a stuffed animal; although the patterns and colours are nothing like the original, when looking at this it can still make one think it’s a stuffed bunny, but for a different reason; here patterns suggest it’s a patchwork.

  • BLYTHART replied

If you ever have time to study any of my Journals you’ll learn that patchwork has a significance for me. Thank you for those lovely words Mui-Ling … I may do another stuffed animal drawing some time; they are fun to do. Stuffed or real … it makes no difference to me because I stylise them anyway :)

Oh Dave! I absolutely love this!!!!

  • BLYTHART replied

Thanks Paul …. I am bowled over at the response to this. I was sitting wondering what to draw and couldn’t think of anything, so rather than draw nothing I decided to draw our daughter’s rabbit mascot and it’s been favourited 20 times in les than 24 hours, which has never ever happened to me before. I must go and see if she has any more mascots tucked away in her room :)

Has Peter the Rabbit ever been on the Stage – he looks like he’s in the (well-deserved) spotlight and about to perform. I wonder if he sings, or perhaps he pulls conjourers out of a hat. Well done, Dave. Must be seen full-size to admire all the stitching.

  • BLYTHART replied

    Thank you Peter …

Peter the Rabbit says I can now reveal to his public that his surname is actually Andre, but don’t tell everyone.

This is just GORGEOUS Dave!! I know Emmett’s going to adore it also ;)))
Congrats on your feature, and hope you get your computer sorted out painlessly too :)

  • BLYTHART replied

Peter the Rabbit sends his regards to Emmett. My computer is back, but it was far from painless :( I have lost everything from My Documents and Desktop. I do back up, but hadn’t for a while. I am currently revising my way of working. I am spending a lot of time backing up files and making more room by feeding videos through Windows Movie Maker to optimise them and thus save space. On top of that, my car has developed a fault which may be expensive. This last week has been hectic and stressful for me. How are things with you? I can’t email you as I lost your address … I’ll get it next time you email me.
