269 - MITCH - DAVE EDWARDS - COLOURED PENCILS & FINELINERS - 2009

This is our youngest cat, Mitch, part Maine Coon and part goodness knows what :) The view you see is the close up view I see when Mitch walks up to my face when I am lying in bed :)

I used Staedtler Fineliners and W.H. Smith’s own-brand coloured pencils.

The picture is on A3 white card.

Mitch has been quite the muse for you of late. Love this perspective!!

  • BLYTHART replied

Thanks. So true. Although maybe you should have said, “mews” :)

Seriously though, he is my muse at the moment, but his step-brother Mao is due a turn.

The way in which you’ve rendered the eyes is amazing. You’ve got total control over that pencil.

  • BLYTHART replied

... not when Mitch is chewing the end of it though :) He’s also chewed the ends of my paint brushes and once when I was doing a watercolour he jumped onto my bench and sent the bowl of water flying so it soaked some documents I had lying nearby. He is a sweetheart, but not the most graceful of creatures :)

This is beautiful Dave, so much detail in here. And this drawing shows so much personality too; the eyes say so much. Great work. =D

  • BLYTHART replied

Thank you Ine. He’s a lovely animal but very mischievous. He teases our older cat and never stops talking. If he comes into the room he has to anounce his presence and when we open the door to let him inside the house he always thanks us.

Congratulations..you have been featured in the First Things Group

  • BLYTHART replied

Thanks – this comes as a treat after just being told tonight (by a Redbubbler) that I am only a second-rate artist who is mentally sick for wanting to get people to like my art.

You have got to be kidding…why would someone say such a terrible thing? were they commenting on one of your works?

  • BLYTHART replied

No, on my work in general. It is someone who calls me his friend. he wanted me to face reality as he felt it would help me. He means well …

Sad thing is, I think his work is first-rate.

this is fabulous Dave…to see your work close-up is a treat…wonderful detail…Mitch must be very delighted with this one!

  • BLYTHART replied

I had the notion of making it close up rather than painting his whole face. It looks more scary that way – he likes being thought of as scary :)

  • EarthquakeBee

    FIRST RATE!

  • BLYTHART replied

    I do try.

  • Colin Cartwright

An excellent close up of the pretty puddy face. Strong colours enhance the image nicely. Excellent, typical expression (almost expressionless but not quite) in those feline eyes, with their vertical pupils.

And If you’re mentally sick for wanting viewers to like your work – we must all be!

  • BLYTHART replied

Thanks Colin; much appreciated. Being on Redbubble is a fun game and although we are all competitive it’s usually good natured. The man got it into his head that I had delusions of grandeur and thought I was Van Gogh. He felt he needed to enlighten me. Yes, I am second-rate compared to Van Gogh, but I don’t see myself as second rate altogether. I see you as a first-rate watercolorist, but that doesn’t mean I think you are a reincarnation of Turner, does it :) If I did think I was the next Van Gogh, I’d agree with him that I was mentally ill :) Yes – I DO want to be “famous” – in Blyth, so people might buy me a pint now and then :) I’m not bothered about being famous in the rest of the world ‘cos I don’t know them all :) I have lived in Blyth for 59 years though.

Another gorgeous portrait!!! Love the way you have done his eyes Dave, they look awesome. Is Mitch now wandering about the house expecting people to bow down before him??

  • BLYTHART replied

My good friend – Mitch has ALWAYS expected us to bow before him. He even announces his presence as he enters a room. I sometimes call him Majestic Mitch.

  • Bob Hall

    Bob Hall

Wonderful work Dave, love the detail and characteristics. Now, this is art! Not bad for second-rate artist. Let’s see…that must put a lot of us third or fourth-rate. I never have figured out who has the “official” measuring scale for us artists. It must be the world’s best kept secret.

  • BLYTHART replied

I think basically, if people look at our work and get pleasure from it we are second-rate artists, but if they later decide to give us money for it, it miraculously becomes first-rate art overnight :)

Love how you have filled the frame with the cats face,Dave, fabulous, love it!!!

  • BLYTHART replied

I was looking through my photos and found one i’d taken where i went real close in. It was screaming to be made into a drawing. I would use Mitch as a live model but every time I move my pencil he grabs it in his teeth.
