268 - POP ART PELARGONIUM - DAVE EDWARDS - COLOURED PENCILS & FINELINERS - 2009

I’ve always loved geraniums (pelargoniums) and I thought I’d do a still life of them, in my own style with added background :)

I used Staedtler Fineliner pens and WH Smiths own brand of coloured pencils (as usual).

Geraniums a great plants. They’re so easy to grow. I’m used to seeing them depicted in terracotta pots as in the art of Beatrix Potter or Kate Greenway, but your drawing brings this flower up to date.

  • BLYTHART replied

Beatrix Potter and Kate Greenaway are artists I greatly admire … and also Arthur Rackham and Walter Crane, Ralph Hedley, etc.

It’s had the poorest reception of any of my work for a while :( I actually thought it was a good one.

Oh this is fantastic!!!! Love the gorgeous detail on the leaves (wonderful colour blending) and the background is brilliant…..”shazam!”
Very cool Dave, another fave xx

  • BLYTHART replied

Many thanks Alexandra … you are the only person who liked it enough to favourite it. I am used to getting at least three favouritings in the first few hours. My wife says you have all been spoiling me and I must accept this one isn’t so popular. As the previous one got 12 favouritings I foolishly expected this to do well too. I was so disappointed I have actually got up in the middle of the night to check.

Wonderful Dave- This one just pops right out, from the thumbnail, very nice xx

  • BLYTHART replied

Thanks for the favouriting; you must have been feeling sorry for me after reading my lament above.

What excites me here Dave, is the way you’ve paid great attention to studying (and painting) the colours of the leaves of the plant in the foreground so beautifully….
I had to look right in there to appreciate them fully, as the vividness of your glorious background was almost hiding them from me!!
    Wonderful :)

  • BLYTHART replied

Thanks Chris. The bakground hits you and then as you slowly recover you get the ltitle surprise of seeing the pelargoniums :P

this is gorgeous Dave….I do love the bright bold circles in the background that spreads out from the middle….a symbol of a bud blossoming…pretty design and a winner!

    OH MY, Dave!!
    What color!! :)
You’re amazing, love your creation!! :))

  • BLYTHART replied

I suppose I am a little rebel … many artists spend a small fortune on their materials and I just use coloured pencils costing $10 for 36.

  • Lynda Robinson

‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ again Dave!!!! Really great work that has brightened a very dreary, cloudy morning from where I am sitting!

  • BLYTHART replied

Thank you Lynda. Some people feel that “grown-ups” should use sombre adult colours, but as I am slowly entering my second childhood (if indeed I ever left my first one) you will be seeing many more brightly coloured creations from me in the future, God willing.

Wow, these are gorgeous, I have been away a while and only just spotted these gorgeous geraniums, I love them too and your interpretation is so lively and full of energy. You have added so much work since the last time I checked in that I can see you are really stretching yourself in fact blossoming was the word that came to mind, but the corny pun was too corny for such lovely work. I love the one of Therese as well.

I thought – ‘Is that a peacock I see before me?’ No, but wow, this is so gorgeous – love the texture of the background and then the geraniums (one of my Dad’s favourite plants) in the foreground – fabulous. I wish I could so this. Brill…

  • BLYTHART replied 25 days ago

Thanks. Why don’t you try. A friend of ours started painting when he was seventy, so it’s NEVER too late. Geraniums are my favourites too.

Thank you for your encouragement Blythart – I am a primary school teacher so I do get to do some artwork – with your permission I would like to put some of your work up on the interactive whiteboard via redbubble so that the children can get some real inspiration. I love the last week of term when we are off curriculum timetable and the kids get to do fun things.
