This is an homage to Madvlad, one of the most original artists on Redbubble.

I got out of my comfort zone to do a portrait for a change.

This is a labour of love, inasmuch as it is a tribute to my good friend Walt Evans, one of the most fascinating artists on Redbubble. I’ve known Walt since before we both joined Redbubble.

I used a selection of photos Walt gave me of himself and his art. I have his permission to do this portrait too, so no copyright has been breached.

The background is based on some of Walt’s designs with a lot of my own ideas thrown in for good measure.

I used coloured pencils and fineliner pens.

Here is a glimpse into the wonderful world of Madvlad:

And here is a link to his portfolio.

I made it as lifelike as I could, which is why it’s noble – just like Walt. The background is based on his designs, with a little of mine interspersed.

Have you seen any of Madvlad’s work – it’s really good … he has a style of his own, which I have attempted to use in parts of the background.

  • andrea verstegen

That’s him alright. You’ve captured his skin tone too, which is an important factor. You’ve obviously put alot of work into this, shows your admiration for Walt. Walt should be chuffed.

  • BLYTHART replied

Happily, Walt does seem to be chuffed.

  • BLYTHART replied

Many thanks Karin. After I drew the portrait, I spent a lot of time doing the background, with Walt watching me all the time from the sheet of card … it was almost like having him visit us :)

  • John Dicandia

    John Dicandia

Brilliant portrait Dave. Love how you filled the background with Walt’s creations!

  • BLYTHART replied

Technically speaking – it’s my interpretation of Walt’s creations, as I wouldn’t copy anyone’s work directly, even though Walt would be too good-natured to object if I had. When you look through Walt’s portfolio (well worth a few visits) you’ll recognise the style I emulated.

    lol…i kept missing it because it said Walt E on my computer….are u kidding me Mr. Dave….it’s colorful….it’s expressive….it’s wonderfully zestful….it shows a true artist heart….that’s the thing i’m looking for myself….for my art…...a vibrant style…something that when u see it…u know i did it….Well…u have that….

  • BLYTHART replied

I am happy with it, but I have to say your portraits have a certain air of professionalism about them that I envy (not that we should be envious of each other, as it is a poor personality trait to have). For me, portraiture is an occasional adventure, but you have the ability to go far with it, on a professional basis. I am concerned that you seem to put yourself down a little … don’t do that – there is no reason for it – you are VERY GOOD my friend.
