179 - HIGH FERRY, BLYTH - DAVE EDWARDS - INK 1990
In the days when I sold prints of my pen and ink work, this sold 1,000 prints, of which 90 were framed and mounted, or logically speaking, mounted then framed :)
It was the most popular drawing I ever did. For almost twenty years I have mused over whether it sold so well because the view had nostalgic value to the purchasers, or whether any artistic merit entered into the the equation. By uploading it onto Redbubble I may soon have a better idea, because none of you will be familiar with this view and will hopefully judge it on its merit as a drawing.
Chris Baker of Redbubble has sent me this link to another view of the ferry .. many thanks Chris :)

Dave, brillant work my friend, i don’t know how you achieve this with ink.Bev
BLYTHART replied
Thanks. The answer to your questions is: “laboriously, over a period of twelve hours” :) In 1990, one lady, not content with a print, asked to buy my original, but as I didn’t sell originals I drew the whole picture all over again and actually got it almost identical. She was happy anyway.
BLYTHART replied
Must mention that this is a poor copy – I will shortly be uploading a better one. The answer to your question is “Laboriously – over a period of twelve hours.” In 1990, I sold prints of this drawing and one lady, not content with a print, wanted to buy the original. I wouldn’t part with it, so she asked if I would draw it again. I did and it was fairly identical and she was happy with it.
By the way, I can remember travelling on this as a lad, but it’s long gone now.
Sebastiaan Koenen
Great drawing Dave! Like your technique with ink.
BLYTHART replied
From an artist of your high ability I take that as a valuable compliment indeed.
Tom Gomez
This is excellent Dave, you have achieved a great deal of realism and the detail is quite amazing. Super work …
BLYTHART replied
Thanks my friend. I still am determined that when I next visit Edinburgh you and I will have tea and scones together … or a pint of beer :)
Linda Callaghan
well….I would say it sold on the skill and talent of the artist! :-D …it is an amazing drawing…the detail, with its lines, angles, depth, and shadows, is definitely eye catching Dave. Skillfully executed indeed!
BLYTHART replied
You say the nicest things – thanks Linda.
BLYTHART
I’VE ADDED A HIGHER DEFINITION IMAGE NOW – BEST VIEWED LARGE.
Sebastiaan Koenen
Well that’s almost to much for me at the moment Dave but thanx! Of course I don’t look that way but I must say I see some interesting things in your works (lotsss ss of creativity and certain ways you handle your creative instruments) which aren’t present in many other styles/works… What I mean to say is that the power of creation might be even more interesting to me then just skills. The latter we can study, improve and flourish, but the first has to be one of a youthful and broad mind… ...I once knew a good looking woman which was very skilled on the piano; I had so much respect she could play parts from Strauss, Bach and others without missing a note and really tight… She once started crying and expressed herself to me that she often feeled unlucky because she thought she mostly didn’t got ideas to compose something of her own… It was a strange moment and I had a difficult time comforting her…
BLYTHART replied
”... a youthful and broad mind” .... I am young at heart … does that count?
Pat Yager
All I can say, Dave, is “WOW, what skill!”, my friend. Great skill plus incredible patience! And a very steady hand. Your perspective is top-notch. A beautiful piece, Dave! (And, yes, young at heart does count!)
BLYTHART replied
Thanks Pat, but you do realise I used a drawing board to achieve the straight lines. My hand isn’t too steady.
Sebastiaan Koenen
Hehe yeah forgot to meantion that Dave! But the first two doesn’t have anything to do with age! I’ve a grandma of 80 who might still be in her ‘30s hehe. Her sister even went to a houseparty when she was over 80…. So heart/mind yeah!

I spose its just a place people would like to be. A well-drawn one
Linda Ridpath
nicely finished …
GEORGE SANDERSON
A brilliant piece, Dave Your pen and ink technique is excellent !!
BLYTHART replied
Many thanks George.
Brian Towers
I agree, I think it’s your best drawing from those days Dave.
BLYTHART replied
Thanks Brian.
madvlad
ac, key dem ic lee this is soooo perfect-an art teacher would cry to see the rules of art 100% shown in this wow
Janis Zroback
Congratulations..you have been featured in the First Things Group
BLYTHART replied
Many thanks Janis. It qualifies as a First Thing, because it was the first (and only) one of my 27 prints to sell 1,000 copies here in my hometown. It was a happy venture that lasted 20 years and got me lots of publicity as a pen and ink artist. Most people here in Blyth still haven’t accepted my new style, but I shall carry on undaunted, because it’s doing well on Redbubble :)
mikeloughlin
Great drawing, obviously a labour of love.
BLYTHART replied
I think it was Mike.
Janis Zroback
We would love you to add all of your lovely work to the group…
BLYTHART replied
I thought it had to satisfy the organisers that it was a “first thing”.
Janis Zroback
Well each time you do a brand new work it’s a first thing really…have a look at the art pages…you will see many works by the same artists…
BLYTHART replied
I think that’s called bending the rules, but hey – I don’t mind if you don’t. I’ll add a few more for you now before i go to bed.
Lynda Robinson
It is a beautifully, highly skilled piece of artwork Dave. Fabulous perspective! All those intricate strokes of your pen must have taken hours. I am particularly impressed with the water!
BLYTHART replied
Thanks Lynda. The water was done using just a pen, but I used a ruler on a drawingboard to do the sky. if you look at some of my old pen and inks you’l see how i composed the sky with loads of ruled lines … a technique a professional artist taught me many years ago.
Janis Zroback
I’t entirely up to you, but have a look at the art pages…
BLYTHART replied
I have just sent your group a load of pictures. You can choose from them; I don’t expect you to want them all. If there are any in my portfolio you think you’d like in your group just say.
Janis Zroback
You are free to post any that you would like…all your work is unique…
Alexandra Felgate
Dave this is a fantastic drawing in its own right!!! The detail, the composition, the movement of the water, all superb! Having said all that, I think all art is sold on an emotional or nostalgic basis, so good on you for being able to capture that in this work!!!
sneha
wow stunning
!! this is simply awesome!!=)
Norval Arbogast
This is terrific
Malcolm Chant
Dave you are full of Talent, this is trully awsome.
Malcolm
BLYTHART replied
Thanks Malcolm … I wish I could believe it myself. I do my best though.
Tom Gomez
Look forward to it Dave, just let me know when you are coming up …
BLYTHART replied
It’s tricky organising it, but I am determined :) Did you read my Bubblemail. I sorted the problem out anyway … it’s because the images aren’t large enough.
Chris Baker
This is sensitive, stunning and atmospheric with perfect perspective, and your inking is beautifully rendered also :)
Silly of me Dave – I was so keen to send you the link to an old photo of this very ferry that I neglected to comment earlier….!
BLYTHART replied
Thanks Chris – I’m looking forward to our email chat.
