260 - MITCH - DAVE EDWARDS - MIXED MEDIA - 2009

I drew our younger cat Mitch in graphite and coloured pencils and then painted a grey upside-down L-shaped border using acrylic paint. When that dried, I drew (using a ruler) squares. I drew free-hand mosaic pieces in each square with fineliner pen and then erased the guideline squares and filled in the pieces with coloured pencils.

Yeah – okay – I know it’s boring reading all that, but lots of people actually ask what mediums were used; myself included :)

For anyone interested in getting to know Mitch and his step-brother Mao, I keep an occasional illustrated diary of their adventures here on Redbubble

You’re so right; he is. He’s the fluffiest cat we’ve ever had – we have to hoover the carpet twice a day because he leaves a trail of fur behind him – seriously.

I like the way the patterns are all different yet compliment each other..well done.

  • BLYTHART replied

Thanks Cath. What I did was to keep a note of all the pencils I used to draw Mitch and then use them to do the mosaic pattern.

Mitch the cat says that by featuring his portrait you have brought him closer to his goal of world-domination :) Many thanks, Dave.

  • Lynda Robinson

    Lynda Robinson

Good old Mitch!!! I hope he is duly flattered by all this attention! Great job Dave and I love the ‘smile’ on his face!!!!

  • BLYTHART replied

... the smile … oh, you must mean the wicked smirk :) He’s a darling, but a strange little creature. We were laughing this morning as we heard Rowan (our 22 year old son) shouting, “Will you get off me, for goodness sake!!” Mitch has somehow singled Rowan out as the recipient of all his biting. He will just dive at Rowan and cling onto his trousers like a mad dog :) Rowan feeds him and is lovely with him, so maybe it is a form of affection :)

  • Woodie

You have a distinctive style all of your own Dave and don’t let anyone change it!!

  • BLYTHART replied

That’s a lovely thing to say Neil – many thanks.

  • AngelArtiste

    AngelArtiste

I love this. I love the feel, the colours the design and most of all the cat

  • BLYTHART replied

He actually is a very loveable little creature – very hairy though. He leaves trails of fluff all over the carpets just by walking across them. Our other cat is smooth-furred and never moults.

  • Kate Eller

    Kate Eller

Awwwww Dave…this is darlin’. Mitch must be struttin’ by now. Congrats Limey Dave ( couldn’t resist that one )

  • BLYTHART replied

That’s fine if I can call you Yankee Kate :P Yeah, Mitch is strutting – he always has had delusions of grandeur though.

  • madvlad

    madvlad

thank you master dave-your approval means, much to me-as, in your own style of art- you are so well, founded, love your kitty, you sure love your critters, why not, they are so faithful, more then kin or lovers/at times have a good weekend here hot hot

  • BLYTHART replied

It’s an awful thing to have to say, but our cats get better treatment than a lot of human children do. They are even allowed to playfully bite us without being punished. They get the best food available, with additives to prevent hairballs forming; they get regular check ups at the vets and when one of them sleeps on our bed I often have to get up at five in the morning to let him out so he can wander around the garden. They have warm beds and toys to play with and lots of attention and cuddles. If only life was so easy for the battered abused children of this world :(
