219 - WILLOW TREE INN, NEWSHAM, c.1885 - DAVE EDWARDS - INK - 2009

This pub was demolished in 1891, so the photo I used will be in the public domain by now. It’s the first pen and ink I have done for a while and it took ages, hence the lack of new paintings :)

The pub stood about a mile from where I live. Another pub with the same name replaced it.

It’s A3 sized and I used Rotring Isograph and Rapidograph pens.

Because of all the detail this didn’t photograph too well, so here is a close-up:

I can appreciate The time and perseverance you have put into this!
    Great Job

  • BLYTHART replied

Thanks Simon… anyone who has used a Rapidograph pen will know how long it takes to depict texture, etc.

This is great, Dave! So much detail in the bricks and anywhere in the picture! I looks a bit more serious than the colourful works, but the playful shapes, so typical for you, are there, and I love it :)

  • BLYTHART replied

So cool that you spotted the “playful shapes” ... I can’t resist doing that :) You will see from my portfolio that I am capable of doing “straight” renditions in pen and ink, but I like bending lines, even if only slightly, to give what I hope is a “cosy” feel to the picture. Thanks again for your perceptive comment.

Most interesting Dave. I live just a staggering distance from the Willow Tree which replaced this older one but hadn’t realised it had such history. One lives and learns – and how good to do it with such great a drawing.

  • BLYTHART replied

“staggering distance” ... what a thoughtful choice of words :)

Yes, I know and I like them too, but I agree on

    >a “cosy” feel of “playful shapes”

    and I’m glad that you

    >_can’t resist doing that :) _

    ;)

  • BLYTHART replied

To be honest, I often get bored doing a straightforward rendition. I am trying to be slightly more subtle now when I bend buildings, otherwise they can end up looking cartoony.

Interesting little inn. Up to you fine standards Dave. I like the way you’ve compromised on the styles of the conventional pen and ink, with your later waving lines. A fine hybrid of the two styles.
Looks like the building at the left, has had a drop too much from the liquid stuff sold in the inn!!

This is beautiful Dave, and a good way of preserving the heritage of the building.
I like the close up (good idea), as it is always neat to see what that looks like when viewing the actual work.
You have created some wonderful textures, well done.

This is fabulous Dave, great to see a NEW pen and ink from you. The detail is just superb, with just a hint of your fabulous bendy building style. i LOVE it!!

  • BLYTHART replied

I am trying to find a way of bending buildings subtly, because sometimes if I bend them too much they look cartoony. Many people bend buidings and it is becoming a little cliched now. I enjoyed doing this, but it took a-g-e-s :)

Aaah so that’s where you been, I can see why this must have taken an age, and it looks fantastic. It’s charming. What a shame they pulled it down. Bet the one in it’s place pales in significance.

  • BLYTHART replied

The new one (if one hundred years old can be termed new) is nondescript by comparison. Our house is one hundred years old also.

I love these little quaint english buildings, this one reminds me of a pub that i’ve seen fro one of my books of lakes district…. Beatrix Potter country..

  • BLYTHART replied

If you like quaint buildings, take a look at this on the Isle of Man. We holidayed there once and it was BEAUTIFUL. I now have an email friend who lives there. Isle of Wight is also beautiful and we holidayed there too. My wife and I love small islands.
