245 - STILL LOST IN FRANCE - DAVE EDWARDS - MIXED MEDIA - 2009
Inspired by Bonnie Tyler’s song Lost In France.
For those who are interested, the girl is painted with watered-down acrylic paint, the Eiffel Tower view is painted with gouache and the rest is done with coloured pencils.
This is a variation on my LOST IN FRANCE painting …

The original was done on A4 paper and I decided to enlarge it to A3, but as I started doing that I decided it would be boring just to do a straight copy, so I did another version instead. I rather like both versions as they each have something different to offer.

wow Dave great colours…you really are handling those acrylics wonderfully..do you like them? a great mixed media painting. You have a fabulous imagination too!
BLYTHART replied
Linda … I haven’t had much experience with acrylics and this was a chance to see what they were like when used with water. Thanks for your compliment by the way :) Yes … I think I am starting to like acrylics.
mikeloughlin

DarkenedMystery
i like the colours :)
BLYTHART replied
If you really want to see some good colours, have a look at Dimarie’s work … she’s cheeky, but a great artist :) As you are a new girl about town, let me know if you have any problems, such as finding the “any key” on your computer :P
dimarie
to elaborate on why i like the colours… – it seems fresher in its colour scheme, as the other blends well together, this newer one stands out as bold and fresh… both images have their own merit :)
BLYTHART replied
Fancy you liking the colours; that new kid DarkenedMystery also likes the colours … but what would she know :P I’ve heard she is a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde … but nice with it :)
dimarie
You are a trippa! lol
BLYTHART replied
You’re not bad yourself :)
Karin Taylor
that’s another cool version, my favourite is the other one, i like them both though Dave…i just like the additional linework in the other one
BLYTHART replied
This was a big step for me, as it’s twice the size of the older one and I also used watered-down acrylic for the very first time (to paint the girl). I just finished it last night and I thought it was a winner, but everyone seems to prefer my old version. My judgment isn’t as good as i thought it was. Ho-hum … back to the drawing board :(
Karin Taylor
oooh noooo…....as i said I like them both….!! there was just a slight preference for the older one….but they are both up there…please don’t be discouraged Dave, they are both wonderful !
BLYTHART replied
Thanks Karin. I know YOU like them both. My big mistake was uploading the old one at the same time, which gave people a choice. I thought it was already on Redbubble, but ironically, I’d removed it months ago because only one person commented on it.
I’ve been fighting a resistance against acrylic but after painting that girl I am quite looking forward to more adventures with acrylic.
I am emotionally attached to this picture as I just completed it last night, but looking at it in the fresh light of a new day I see that maybe it is too cluttered. I think the top half is better than the lower half.

Looks like you’re getting to grips with acrylic well Dave. And mixed media also. I tend to think it’s like a cake where a combination of different ingredients gives different results depending on taste and technique. If all goes well the recipe can give some tasty pictures….and cakes.
BLYTHART replied
Someone just showed me how to add music, so if you look at this picture now you’ll hear Bonnie Tyler singing Lost In France.
Hidemi Tada
i prefer to this in your version,Dave. nice work.
wutz4tea
...just an oversite… I knew I’d been here and like this picture…I also like the other one…but yeah, you are a good artist like I know that I am and we all are, so don’t beat yourself because of lack of faving. We either forget or rb is glitchy.
Also every so often I look at all the things I’ve faved and I remember why I faved them..usually because they inspired me…..so I get new inspiration from them….
BLYTHART replied
Thanks for favouriting this … I appreciate your kindness.
AngelArtiste
Oh, I’d liek to be lost in France, or somewhere in the Old Country. This picture is fantastic =) I do liek it better than your old one although both are nice =)
BLYTHART replied
Thanks Angela.

Hi Dave,
If I have to make a choice I prefer this one not that there is anything wrong with the other one!
If I’m using acrylic on paper I tend to water them down and use them like water colours. (I can’t get on with gouache at all!!!). Your style lends its self to mixed media.
Cheers Neil
BLYTHART replied
Many thanks Neil .. that’s cheered me up a lot, as I was really discouraged by the poor reception this has received, compared to my other artwork.
Tom Gomez
Lovely work Dave …
BLYTHART replied
Thanks for tonight’s comments Tom.

haven’t tried gouache, and as for acrylic and colored pencil using them all, I see a beautiful result.

It’s like she’s woken after a wild night on magic mushrooms, and has no idea which candy colored road leads back to her hotel, well done,Dave.
BLYTHART replied
I never thought of it that way Lance, but you may be right.
