164 - EMERGING FROM LIVERPOOL - DAVE EDWARDS - WATERCOLOUR & INK - 2006

This is a painting I did three years ago. It was intended as a tribute to the great city of Liverpool, England and whilst being a bit whimsical it did include images of the Anglican Cathedral, the Catholic Cathedral, Saint John’s Beacon and of course the Beatles.

I swapped it with a popular Vancouver (Canada) artist, John Ferrie, for one of his lovely floral acrylics.

I wish I’d never swapped now … although I still like John’s painting and it still
hangs on our wall.

Owing to a misunderstanding of English etiquette, when I sent John a photo of his painting hanging on our wall he failed to reciprocate. A photo of my painting hanging on John’s wall would have meant an awful lot to me, ‘cos I really respected the guy.

Instead of good-naturedly returning my compliment, he claimed I was forcing him to “jump through hoops” when I reminded him a month later. He refused to take the photo and stopped emailing me, claiming I must be suffering from depression … sad, but these things happen and I wish him no ill … he’s a good artist and was a good friend while it lasted. Wherever you are John, I wish you a happy 2009.

I’ve seen the original Dave and agree that we sometimes wish we had kept hold of our art which we later think of as ‘special’.

Thanks! I’d love to see what you really look like :) You freak me out with that scary avatar picture :) I have always had a healthy fear of women anyway, but my wife is only five foot, so she ain’t too scary :) There were three very dominant middle-aged women at church when I was a little lad and I think they put the fear of God in me :) I was constantly being scolded.

I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!!!!! I am a HUGE Beatles fan, and when I visited Liverpool back in 2000 I totally fell in love with the city, so much so I seriously considered moving there…...a long way from home!! This is a fantastic piece (not suprised you regret the swap, although I’m sure John’s work is lovely)

  • BLYTHART replied

I’ve always liked Liverpool, because as a child I often visited my Grandma in Wrexham, Wales and later in life I visited a friend at Southport, so I regularly visited Liverpool

I’d love to visit the city again (quite frankly I’d just love to visit the UK again) but its so expensive for us to travel to Europe, I doubt it’ll be any time soon…....I’ll just keep dreaming!

  • BLYTHART replied

I’d like to see Australia, but it’s too expensive.

My son bought me a boxed set of biographies of the Beatles … one book each. Rowan ( my son) likes Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, etc. It makes me feel young to know that many young people today like music that I started liking back in the sixties and seventies. The gap between generations isn’t so big these days. I never bothered with the music my parents liked, but Rowan and I went to see Joe Satriani together and both enjoyed the music. I also like modern music … well, some of it :) Thanks for putting me on your Watchlist.
