I thought I’d try that old technique of having the background painted and the subject pen and ink. I’ve often thought of it, but wasn’t sure if it would work. When I was in Barcelona I noticed that both Picasso and Dali had done portraits this way.

If you look at my Profile you will see a little mini gallery of clickable links to my pussycat paintings.

this is fabulous dave! love the yellow “aura” around the cat…...i can appreciate “visualizing” aura as i usually see them too/just excellent!

  • BLYTHART replied

The aura is poetic licence I’m afraid and is the closest the little scamp will ever get to being saintly. We love him though … even though he has just trashed our Christmas tree!

This innocent little sweetheart you see in my picture has tonight just managed to drag a strip of tinsel up the stairs and was trying to get it up the ladder into my attic study when I caught him. Enroute he was chewing it and the house looks like Santa’s Grotto with all the bits of tinsel. What is worse is that it is one in the morning and I would wake the neighbours if I hoovered, so it will have to wait until tomorrow

Mitch is a little sweetheart. He follows us around everywhere. He even sits on the rim of the bath when I am having a soak … a bit scary when he leaps from side to side of the bath though as he is a little clumsy and I dread getting clawed accidentally one day :)

I like this technique. I hope you do not mind if I try this sometime:) Barcelona??? Wow! I’d really love to be there. I keep telling my husband that maybe we should live in Spain for a while.

I love your work:) I also love all of the stories about your cat!

  • BLYTHART replied

Feel free to try this technique … I copied the idea from Picasso and Dali. When I was in Barcelona last year I saw some work by them both and each had done portraits in black and white with coloured backgrounds. Both our cats do funny things, but mainly the younger one. Today’s funny from Mitch was that the electrician was doing a job at our fusebox and Mitch dived onto a suitcase which was behind the electrician. The suitcase fell with a loud bang, making the electrician startle and almost drop his tools :) Mitch always lets us know when he is nearby :)

I think that by leaving the cat in black and white it stands out and because it is not coloured your eye is drawn to it. I believe that if the cat was coloured it would get lost and blend into the other colours and would not stand out like it does in this work.
