HOMAGE TO FIREDRAKE

Coloured pencils on A3 sized paper.

Before anyone decides to do their duty by reporting me for plagiarism, please be kind enough to read this extract from an email by Kaitlin Beckett (Firedrake):

“I wouldn’t mind you doing a take on one of my beasties if you felt like it – it would be in a completely different style & medium anyway.”

I had great fun doing this drawing and am grateful to Firedrake/Kaitlin for allowing me to use one of her fantastic creations. I have altered it a little to accomodate my own style and also so as not to be doing a direct copy, which is definitely plagiarism.

Kaitlin is one of my favourite artists on Redbubble … no, not just Redbubble … the world :) I adore her beaky creatures, but I am a little scared of them, ‘cos they have sharp teeth and take no prisoners. You may wonder why people keep disappearing from Redbubble and why the beaky creatures are getting fatter ….

Anyway, thanks for looking at my tribute to Firedrake and now it is time for you to pay a visit to her fantastic portfolio of work.

I’m sure there are creatures like this in the deep oceans. Your drawing is of an interesting but fearsom beast Dave. I like your sea very much, it has that oriental look and must have taken a lot of work. I could pin this on the fridge door to help with my diet. You and Firedrake could have a monster sale some day.

I share your opinion of Firedrake. She’s fabulous and unique. This is an excellent homage. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. It’s great to see a product of two of my favourite artists on RB.

Dave..this is very Interesting . ..but you know how I feel about scary things and this one is pretty scarey..it has such big teeth.. whew..what a big set of teeth it has..hhha!!!!
and while I love all of nature and I respect it..I still get scared by some of the things in nature..like this creature..it scares me a bit!!.. sorry ..it just does.
apart from that ..you’ve done a great Job on this..and the colours are really brilliant !!
How you work pencils like that is beyond me..I think it’s a great talent and skill to be able to work with pens and pencils like that ..

    well done!!

    xxxooo

  • BLYTHART replied

Well thanks Catherine .. that’s kind of you. The waves took AGES to do and you, of all people, will be delighted to hear that I did the waves entirely from my imagination using three pencils … dark blue … light blue … and white for blending purposes. As even you will admit, I haven’t quite done a direct copy of Kaitlin’s straitjacket creature as I changed a few bits and certainly changed the colours. No-one can do these creatures the way Kaitlin does, but I just had to pay homage top her skills … especially when she suggested it. Now if you haven’t seen Firedrake’s portfolio please dollow one of the links to the right of the screen … she is fantastic … so are her paintings :)

Thanks, but in fairness, I can’t claim credit for the boolaces Lance … click on the thumbnail at the right to see Kaitlin’s original.

Dave this is really good and living in Oz down under the idea of teeth does scare us so we like to keep away from them in the water. I think the waves are really good. I have an idea for the laces, when he misbehaves, you could sort of pull them in to gaggle him like you do shoes.

He is a noble beast! Brighter coloured, so I’m thinking he must be tropical, and the back fin must allow for easier swimming…but not unlike his pale cold-water cousin!!
