218 - SACRE COEUR, PARIS - DAVE EDWARDS - INK - 2008
I used to do lots of pen and ink work and then I started doing colourful “bendy” buildings.
Pen and ink takes me longer (much longer sometimes) than colour work, but I thought it was time I did another.
I took a chance and drew one of my favourite Paris views … but I used a subtle form of my “bendy buildings” style for a lot of the picture.
PLEASE NOTE: THIS LOOKS BETTER ENLARGED.

Fantastic detail,Dave, how long does it take to complete such a task!!!
BLYTHART replied
Thanks Lance. I didn’t time myself, although I sometimes do, but when I did pen and inks regularly it usually took about ten or twelve hours. I used to do them on A4, but I now use A3, which of course is bigger.
Paul (Quixote)...
Excellent work, BLY. I could imagine that this drawing takes some time to complete.
BLYTHART replied
Thanks Paul … may I mention that it looks better in the enlarged view.
izzybeth
Beautiful and gorgeous work. black and white is an interesting departure from your colorful drawings…
BLYTHART replied
Thanks Izzybeth; you are kind. It’s actually the colorful drawings that are my new style though; I did nothing but pen and ink for many years. This one is something I have done this week (finished it tonight). I don’t want to replace my colour work though; I’ll try to do both.
izzybeth
Awesome.
Terry Krysak
Great drawing Dave, I love it.

SUPER GOOD, LIKE A PRO, GOOD DRAWING…CONGRATS…HOW DID THE SHOW GO SO FAR, ANY SALES? INTEREST…?
BLYTHART replied
I’m not allowed to sell anything, but there has been some interest. If I survive to 65 I will be allowed to sell stuff then … only seven years to go.
Colin Cartwright
A combo of pen and ink and your bendy style, Dave. Very good, and Montmartre is my favourite part of Paris. I stayed there for a week, a few years ago, a rooftop apartment in the student area!
BLYTHART replied
I stayed on Rue Abbesses in a Comfort Hotel and was pretty high up too. I adore Montmartre.
Sean Farragher

Brian Towers
One of you best I reckon Dave. So well composed and drawn and it definately has that special style of yours.
BLYTHART replied
Thanks Brian … it’s the first pen and ink building I’ve done for a while and I took a chance by using elements of my bendy style in it.
Woodie
I really like this Dave and thanks for pointing out Karin Taylor’s tips!
Cheers Neil

Mike Paget
Love the bendy building effect Dave – I have tried it myself a few times – great stuff
BLYTHART replied
I did my first “bendy building” in 2003 and imagined I was being original. Since then I have seen dozens of artists who all bend their buildings. I try to veer towards subtlety although I have seen one man who bends his buildings almost forty degrees.
andrea verstegen
looks awesome. like the work in the trees. Looks like they ‘re blowing around in the wind. Is this your first black and white bendy?
BLYTHART
This was my first bendy black and white. Not a good scan of it though.

Thanks – you are an angel – but don’t fly away :)

You should have never left B&W… you do well with it.
Another thing I have noticed is that people enjoy B&W more. When I look at the sales and views I have received with my work, the biggest views are in the B&W’s I have drawn without submitting to any group!
And I don’t understand why color pictures don’t take as much time as B&W, but you are right, that is true.
BLYTHART replied
Thanks Lenora, but I haven’t given up on black and white. I just spent $60 on pens a few weeks ago. I think the reason they take longer than colour is that a large brush can fill an area in seconds that takes much longer with hatching. I’m off to take a look at your work now.
Lenora Brown
Thanks for the watch. I use fine tipped markers for the color I do. For me, it should take just as long but I seem to be more meticulous with B&W then I am with color.
I just spent more on pens too. Its a good buy and will pay off when the piece is finished; if only for our own satisfaction.
BLYTHART replied
I used to use Rotring Isograph pens, but they are now about $40 each. I still have a few left though. I find the fineliners are good.
BLYTHART replied
You have inspired me. I have just started a new pen and ink drawing. They take about twelve hours sometimes, so as I work in two-hour spurts it should be ready in a week :)
LTScribble
Wow, working with ink can be difficult and you did all the hatching and cross hatching so well….very cool
BLYTHART replied
Thank you. I combined my two styles here … comare this with my earlier pen and inks. I am currently doing a traditional pen and ink drawing … it’s taking ages.
parmi
This is brilliant! Love the detail you have achieved through the ink. Your style adds so much more to the scene, adding mood without being dramatic. Light and fun, really enjoy this!
