233 - THATCHED COTTAGES AT SHANKLIN, I.O.W. - DAVE EDWARDS - COLOURED PENCILS - 2008

One of the loveliest family holidays we ever had was at the Isle of Wight. It had a lovely olde worlde feel about it that really suited me.

This picture was done on A3 paper using coloured pencils.

I’d like to thank Catherine Walker of Redbubble for suggesting the subject.

Thanks Romo .. and thanks for favouriting this .. I drew it this evening and only uploaded it two or three minutes before you spotted it.

    I especially love this work…

  • BLYTHART replied

I took a chance, as the subject matter is not my usual. Thanks ever so for favouriting it; that means a lot to me. I am aiming for a slightly more subtle version of my bendy buildings style. For me the important thing about this picture is that I actually enjoyed doing it.

I sense a Vincint VanGogh here. This is gorgeous.

  • BLYTHART replied

What a lovely compliment … he is one of my favourite artists. I am about to start reading a big hard-backed book about his life. Thank you; you’ve made my day.

lovely, has a very 1950’s feel to it!!

I used a Victorian photo for reference, but changed colours and bent lines until it was my own picture.

I love your bendy buildings and they’re not so far off being real on some of these olde ones are they? Great stuff !:)

I’m trying to find words to describe how I find this new work Dave, but it’s a combination of quaint and delightful. Considering how quickly you painted/drew this one, it is a great success with lots of form and detail in the shapes. colours and textures. Your ‘bendiness’ is still there but a bit more restrained and so adds a lot to the overall effect. The atmospheric perspective in the softening of the trees give depth, together with those all to useful shadows.

  • BLYTHART replied

Aha … so my painting is quaint and delightful … just like me :)

No dave..I didn’t doubt you- sorry if you took it that way .. and I’m sorry if I
sounded as if I was having a go at you ..I wasn’t.. ..true!!

It was just a bit of a sarcastic joke..after what we’d just been talking about.. ....
those conversations we had about the famous artists works and tributes etc..
and how I was aying that I’d love to see you do your own work..
I guess should have put it differently..OK..but I was pulling your leg ..so to speak ..to see what you would say..
you know I was rapt that you’d done your own drawing and not had to turn to anyone famous for inspiration ..I even told you that in the mail I sent to you ..
gosh ..give a girl a break.. hhha!!!!

as for the other part ..I’m sorry I’ll have to disagree with you ..
as I’ve never heard of nor even looked at any of the artists works that you told me -
were a bit like my own original paintings
so I doubt that they could subconsciously show up in my work
I would have had to have seen those artists or paintings
somewhere first …and that’s impossible… I am somewhat of an isolated and recluse painter
and seeing I never look at art books or go to art galleries then It would be pretty amazing if I could pick up their work subconsciously ..don’t you think ..

you might not regard your work as original but I regard mine as original
and I still think it’s an excuse when people say .. “nothing in this world isoriginal. ”.
    I don’t beleive that for a minute….not a second
as I said before that Originality comes from an artists Interpretation of their own expereinces and feelings in life and about life here on earth..everyone’s interpretations are very different..
therefore seeing I don;t copy anyones art work ..my Interpretations of my expereinces.are original.

thanks again ..and I do like your drawing..like I said before..

    thanks dave..talk again soon..

  • catherine walker

    catherine walker

HI..so why does me saying “you beauty”..prove how observant I am..??

thanks dave .. I would like to know this one

  • BLYTHART replied

It was a joke you obviously didn’t get … I meant you were observant enough to spot from my little thumbnail picture that I was a beauty, but I’m only joking … I am 58 with grey hair, wrinkles and bags under my eye … no beauty :)

  • Sean Farragher

Ok.. Oh ..I see ..!!! well that’s all good ..I thought you were being sarcastic
    for a moment..

    .hhha!!

I do like you ..and I know you like me.
we are just highly sensitive types..
a slight comment or remark that we don’t fully
understand from each other seems to set us off
    ...hhha!!

lets be good and try to communicate from now on
with out having to think a day on what the other person just said..OK hheee!!!

I’ll do it if you will…
lets be friends..we are so much alike (too sensitive for our own good) that we
    could be very good friends..hha!!

    xxxooo

  • BLYTHART

    BLYTHART

I hadn’t realised you were sensitive; you come across as being confident and not caring what others think about you. Maybe we sensitive people travel in disguise so people won’t know we are sensitive. I’ll try to bear it in mind if you still wish to chat.

Though this is quite different from your earlier work, it has much character. I like the distortion in perspective and the atmosphere created with your choice of color.

  • BLYTHART replied

You may (or may not) be interested to know this is a very recent work. It was a return to bendy buildings in a slightly more subtle form, which is a direction I feel I may be going in the future.

    Hi from Trisha,
Have you ever had the urge to cut your ear off?
I only ask because this painting reminds me of Van Gogh’s use of color and line.
It is one of my favorites, and as soon as my money situation improves I am going to start purchasing some of your cards.

    Thanks for sharing you work!

  • BLYTHART replied

I am flattered indeed. Sorry to disappoint you, but I intend to keep both my ears … other than that though, I adore Van Gogh and have books about him galore. I haven’t consciously copied his style, but I guess I must be influenced by him. Thanks again my friend.

Obviously, your work is terrific. I had to scroll a long way down to leave my message. I love your way of painting with all the textures and the colors. I was just telling my husband that I always seem to be attracted to gouache’s and colored pencils and pastels. Your work is very inspiring. Thank you…I’ll keep watching you!

  • BLYTHART replied

I would recommend coloured pencils as they don’t leave a mess and they are fun to work with.
