232 - PICASSO'S NANNY GOAT - DAVE EDWARDS - COLOURED PENCILS - 2008
I took a liking to a sculpture of a nanny goat when I was at the Picasso Museum in Paris and decided to do a drawing based on it. I don’t know if Picasso would have approved, but I had great fun doing it. The original is called Nanny Goat (Chevre) and was sculpted in 1950, the year I was born.
I used A3 paper and coloured pencils.

Super creation Dave …
paul romanowski
SHE IS SWEET, WHAT, THE RATE TO HIRE HER…
BLYTHART replied
Depends how big your lawn is … she’s got strong teeth and loves eating grass.
paul romanowski
UHM, NO NOT FOR THIS, ....DOES SHE SIT WITH THE KIDS? LIKE TAKE CARE OF THEM AND STUFF?
BLYTHART replied
Oh … as in Super Nanny :) (a reference to a British TV series).
GloriaDK
Dave he looks such a friendly fellow. We are having some rain here the grass is growing, no he might eat the gold fish in the small pond we have here now.
BLYTHART replied
Forgive me for teasing you Gloria, but nanny goats are always female; billy goats are male :) Thanks for saying she looks friendly …
ronibgood
Your work is so interesting and unique.
helene ruiz
wow! what a fabulous drawing! Looks like a painting! just excellent!
Firedrake
Great detail in the body Dave.

She has a very crafty look in her eye,Dave, the moment you turned your back you would feel the full force of her intentions on your butt, well done!!!
BLYTHART replied
Ah … you spotted the crafty gleam in her eye … I like goats but wouldn’t trust one with my back turned.
fesseldreg
Bony AND stony!!! This is great!
Linda Ridpath
like this, love the way you are thinking!!!!
BLYTHART replied
.. phew … so I’m not going to be sent to a shrink after all :)

Great image. I like the little creatures (worms) popping up from the landscape and the cross hatches in nanny’s round belly. Lots of expression in the goats and purple creatures too. Love it.
BLYTHART replied
You know how to please my ego … the worms and cross-hatching were me getting carried away …. glad you liked them.
Brian Towers
I do like your styalised goat Dave, it has good form and texturing. What is the significance of the gold leg bands?
BLYTHART replied
Thank you Brian. Short of contacting Picasso at a seance we will never know what the significance of the leg bands is. On the sculpture they may even have been wires supporting the legs; I felt it deserved some gold leg bands for being such a nice nanny goat. Much of the symbolism in great art has been created by the art historians and not the artists. I firmly believe, Brian, that if you put a close-up photo of your painting palette on Redbubble, someone in the world would admire the deep significance of it and the remarkable intellectual powers of the artist :)
Linda Ridpath
no…. we all love an original thinker!!! lol :>)
Chookas
SEEE!!! You have been doing Ekphrasis art for AGES! lol we all have :O)
This is a GORGEOUS GOAT! I am so glad you painted your impression of the sculpted one :O)
BRAVO! ♥
Brian Towers
Very true Dave. I’ve come across many non-artists who are ‘experts’ in interpreting other people’s work and in many cases talking total rubbish. Remember the school visit by a group of child physcholigists who gave in-depth reasons why a child painted his sky brown. The simple answer the kid gave when asked was he’d run out of blue paint.
BLYTHART replied
I like that :)
Hidemi Tada
wonderful, I say from my heart.
BLYTHART replied
You are very kind.
Sean Farragher
fantastic work,,,,
Ine Spee
Thought I had commented on this already but apparently I didn’t! Old age kicking in already for me? =P
I think you turned this into a great version of Picasso’s goat, keeping a lot from the original yet still making it your own. Love the cross-hatching on the belly and the nice bright background (especially the blue contrasting against the yellow-orange of the goat). =D
BLYTHART replied
Thanks Ine. Hey, if old age is “kicking in” for you it has scored a million goals for me as I am so old I have reached the stage where still having my own teeth and hair is something I’m proud of :) Seiously, I’m 58, which you probably see as ancient.
Ine Spee
Haha nahhh, don’t worry, I don’t think you’re ancient! Though you’re getting there. =P
But really, you’re not old yet, only a bit older than my parents (and they haven’t had their own teeth since they were young!). =)
BLYTHART replied
If I am ancient then you are a little baby :) Gotcha!
BLYTHART replied
.... a nice little baby though :)
BLYTHART replied
I have all my own teeth (minus four) ... but I don’t bite :)

Congratulations on being featured in the Exceptional Ekphrasis Group!!

STILL LOOKING GOOD….
Linda Callaghan
before I go to dreamland ..when did you load this one…? great nanny goat! your style is so unique…great art again Dave and a fav. Also like the abstract background and colouring.
BLYTHART replied
Thanks Linda, I loaded this a few weeks ago. It’s one of my own personal favourites, if I may be so bold. For reference, I used a photo I took in the Picasso museum in Paris. At least one person on Redbubble objects to the use of photos, but I see no harm in it. I rarely do a straight copy anyway.
Linda Callaghan
was going to answer that point in my mail to you which I will do tomorrow..too late now..I do a lot of my work from photos and I see no harm either …you can always do your own spin on it anyway and why not take advantage of technology. It is not like you can always set up your easel and paints in the middle of a storm or on a rainy day but if you like a subject you can take a photo and paint it later hey! ......this one did not come into my watchlist either so glad I saw it.
Rainer Kozik
This is one of your best in my opinion. She is one mean Nanny.
I tease my wife about being a goat ( she’s a Capricorn) – so will show this to her.
(Hope I survive the night!!!)
Great work, as usual.
Cheers – Rainer :)))
BLYTHART replied
Tee-hee … you are a brave man … assuming you are still alive :)
Rainer Kozik
Still here…... Phew!!! (she loves it too)
BLYTHART
Loves what? ... being teased? She probably tells people you are her old Billy Goat Gruff :P
SarahNiebank
beautiful use of colored pencils to say the least…WOW…if i was a goat this is how i’d like to look!

BLYTHART replied
Many thanks … if I was your fairy godmother I would allow you to become a goat for saying such nice things about my picture :)

There’s something so endearing about this goats face. She’s lovely! I also love how the sky is just as stylized as everything else, really gorgeous piece :)

BLYTHART replied
“75 and almost dead” .... what a thing to say my friend! A lively old sea dog like yourself will probably die aged 120 while chasing Miss America through the woods :) Failing that, we’ll just have to shoot you when you reach 130 :)
Karin Taylor
just fantastic Dave!
Carol Berliner
Outstanding work !Pure magic! Instant fav!
Martin Kirkwood
I like this, quite surreal. It’s almost as though BLYTHART got hold of Picasso by the hair and Dali by the scruff of the neck then banged their heads together.
BLYTHART replied
I saw the actual sculpture in the Picasso Museum in Paris … yes I also like Dali as it happens :) I saw some of his work in Barcelona.
Diana-Lee Saville
BLYTHART replied
Many thanks for the invite. I have joined and submitted Picasso’s goat. I can’t resist commenting on the fact that one of the conditions is “no nudity” ... I am sorry, but my goat is totally naked :) Yes, I know it means no naked people in the picture, but it amused me :)
Diana-Lee Saville
ha ha…yes it is funny :))
Diana-Lee Saville
Thanks for adding your goat to Globetrotting Goats :))
Chris Baker
Missed this one Dave, and think this is just great!! The overall comp is pleasing, the goats belly is perfection, and if I may say, somehow reminded me of Holman Hunts ‘Scapegoat’:

Though nowhere identical, just hit me as similar…. :)
BLYTHART replied
Thanks. I saw that at the Lady Lever Gallery, Port Sunlight. I love all the Pre Raphaelite paintings.
