223 - MORPETH CASTLE IN 1777 - DAVE EDWARDS - INK & WASH - 2008

The remains of this castle still stand today in Morpeth, a little Northumbrian town in North East England.

I used indian ink with dip pens and watercolours for this picture.

A fine drawing in ink, Dave. You’ve put a lot of time in here, with shading the stones and careful rough textures. And keeping the ground and sky free, to concentrate the viewer upon the castle
    Excellent.

My oh my, this is such an inspiring drawing. I love the treatment of the foreground. And the wonky way the building is not quite square. SO NICE.

As always, you have done a really beautiful job on the inking of this drawing. The texture in it is really great and I quite like the composition of the drawing as well. =)

In reply to your Woodie comment Dave – not a nice subject to take about for a space artist who suffers from astroids.
Do I see changes in your ‘styles’ Dave? I know you like to ‘move on’ and try new techniques. I like this painting. The shadows (my passion) and detail give it a solid 3D look. There are some lovely subtle colours. And, look, very few curvey lines – although as a red-blooded fella I don’t object to them.
I’ve been in this ‘castle’ a couple of times. It had a very long history and was leased out to a family for many years – perhaps it still is someone’s home.

  • BLYTHART replied

Thanks for your comments Brian. I am using ink and wash more than I used to, but it’s not a new development for me as I experimented with it many years ago. Mrs Towers did mention once that she’d had you fitted with blinkers to prevent too much admiration of passing curves. I think she was probably referring to those undulating northern hills past Morpeth. I guessed you might have been in this castle and was actually going to title this work “Morpeth Castle, as visited by Brian Towers in 1770, but I decided against giving away your age to all and sundry. And before I go, may I ask if Sundry is the day before Mundry?

In my opinion this is the best piece of work you have submitted to our North East England group, into my favourites it goes.

    Well done Dave.

  • BLYTHART replied

... thanks … but my next piece of art will be totally different. Variety is the spice of life. I keep flitting from one style to another, which many people probably find very frustrating :)

Ah, lovely!! I like the fine pen details.
    What’s a bumswizzler??

  • BLYTHART replied

I’ve been asking Brian that for years and I’m not sure if he knows either. It’s just an all-purpose expression of astonishment or admiration we use, as in, “well I’ll be bumswizzled” ... If you really want to know, send Brian a Bubblemail … that’ll amuse him. Use your feminine charms :)

  • Patricia L. Ballard

Wonderful work, Dave. The angle at which you’ve drawn the building is unique. Great composition. It has a sense of the surroundings as well as the ruins.

I’ve got to put the record straight – and myself – I’m sure Bumswizzling was an expression used by Worzel Gummage when on one of the best of children’s programmes on TV about a ‘live’ scarecrow. Just another word for being puzzled.

  • BLYTHART replied

I put bumswizzle into Google and got this=

  • BLYTHART replied

I was only bumswizzling guv … didn’t mean no harm ;)

I bet Firedrake could invent a bumswizzling monster for her collection.

    your honour …

  • Firedrake

    Firedrake

HAHA…that reminds me…I had a worzel gummage doll!! I haven’t thought about that for years. I think a bum swizzler sounds like something made of plastic that comes in a pack of 6.

  • BLYTHART replied

I think you might be being rude, but i can’t prove it :))

This is becomming an interesting chat-line Dave. How to get more comments for a picture, introduce a new word and get people coming back for answers. Wonder what Firedrake had in mind! I’m bumswizzled.

  • BLYTHART replied

If Firedrake means what i thinks she means, I’ll explain to you when you are 21 ;)

  • BLYTHART replied

The only reference I found on Gogle was this:

“I’ve just been quaffing this 15 year old oak-aged port. It’s rather spiffing.

Oh bumswizzle, I appear to have dropped a tiny droplet onto my left spat. How tiresome.

    /twizzles monocle”
