142 - VARIATION ON HOKUSAI'S WAVES (INK - 1987)

Another old one I just scanned from my display book. Since I joined Redbubble I have very little time to spare for doing new drawings, so I am using up my old ones that no-one has seen anyway – hope you don’t mind.

For this drawing to receive acknowledgment from a lady of Japanese descent is a great compliment. I feel honoured. Many thanks. I love old Japanese art (and some modern Japanese art too) and this is my way of paying tribute to a great artist – Hokusai.

No, not at all, I can’t stand with young generation ’s music, my favorite is like this,
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGU-Za7FL0g&feature=related

  • BLYTHART replied

Shonen Knife aren’t that modern actually. They have been performing for twenty-eight years. As I have a 21 year old son and a 25 year old daughter I listen to a lot of modern music and can appreciate such groups as Portishead and Muse. Those singers you mention have good voices, but of course I can’t understand the language. I enjoy classical music and flok music … I have very wide tastes in music.

  • Mui-Ling Teh

    Mui-Ling Teh

Fantastic work Dave, it does have a the quality of a Japanese print, and at the same time very much identifiable as your work. And congratulations on making the homepage!

  • BLYTHART replied

After reading Hidemi Tada’s comment, may I ask if you have heard of Shonen Knife … our son has loads of their albums and we all enjoy them … they are a cult band though, not a charts band.

  • Marita McVeigh
  • Hidemi Tada

    Hidemi Tada

I checked Shone Knife, and found it is just noise for me. i love classical music too. i am listening to it all time when i am painting. i love folk song too. i often blow “green sleaves” with my harmonica. i can play many English folk songs.

  • BLYTHART replied

Folk music is my favourite form of music, but I doubt whether you’ll have heard of the ones I like as they are all British. I do also like Americans … Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, etc. Greensleeves is one of the oldest songs in England. We had to sing it at school, back in the 1950s.

  • Linda Callaghan

    Linda Callaghan

wow fabulous ink wave drawing Dave!! when did u load this? as it did not appear on my monitor? I came to see what you were up to as not seen any work off you lately….bubble is having trouble at the moment with doubleups and reloads of old paintings …my driftwood and early bird loaded itself again yesterday on its own!!! and some people commented on it that had not seen it before even tho. it was put up ages ago. hope they fix the prob. soon. love this drawing!! so much detail and great angles…a fav.

  • BLYTHART replied

My Waves picture has been on Redbubble a long time, but was recently featured, which brought it a flurry of attention. I’ve been busy recently and hardly anyone is commenting on my work, so thanks. That’s the thing with Redbubble … if you are constantly busy painting it keeps you noticed, but if you haven’t time, you get forgotten. Glad you haven’t forgotten me though :)
