216 - BUT MUMMY TOLD US TO SHARE - DAVE EDWARDS - COLOURED PENCILS - 2008

I felt inspired to do a teddy bear picture after realising how much of a part teddies played in my life. My parents bought me a teddy for my first Christmas (1950) and it survived until I grew up, then went to live on top of a wardrobe (Teddy, not me) in my parents’ bedroom. After they died I couldn’t find it, so my Dad must have binned it … what a way to go after 37 years of being part of the family :-(

I have always liked Winnie the Pooh (the original Ernest Shepard drawings) and Paddington Bear and Garfield, etc.

I was inspired to include the box of chocolates because a young woman I sometimes exchange Bubblemails with often mentions chocolates. I’m deliberately not saying who she is and then dozens of women will Bubblemail me saying, “Is it me? I like chocolate” :))

I am offering copies of this picture for sale as cards, so if you know anyone who loves teddy bears AND chocolate … roll up and buy one :))

Ooh you’re up late Dave, it is interesting to see that the bear with the chocolate looks much happier but I am drawn to the bear on the right who looks very lonely indeed. Good drawing I love the way you have down the bears in a chequered pattern, nice use of colours and patterns.

Good work! But I must say… The teddy bears look like their feet have been amputated! :(

  • BLYTHART

BLYTHART in reply to Matt Merritt’s comment, 2 months ago

I may give them emergency surgery to sew their feet back on Matt.

  • Matt Merritt

    Matt Merritt, 2 months ago

You may want to… It looks like they are staring at their non-existent feet! :( lol

And thanks for favoriting my “Spring Colours”!

It would certainly explain the grim expression on the sad teddy. It’s well after midnight here now, but tomorrow I’ll alter it, just to avoid you getting too excited … haha! On the other hand, if I leave it as it is, maybe the sadists on Redbubble will favourite it …. oh … decisions, decisions :))

Wonderful Dave. I had a teddy bear that kept me safe at night, consoled me and put up with my bursts of anger – his name was Bluey. People told me he had a constantly sad expression (like the bear on the right in this picture) but to me his expression was more content and thoughtful. Thanks for sharing Dave. (I agree the original E H Shepard drawings for Winnie the Pooh are truly magical.)

Hi Paul … you have placed me in a very difficult position here … I respect confidentiality, but if you have subjected a poor Teddy to angry outbursts, I really feel morally obliged to report you to the Teddy Bears’ International Protection Society. As I like you though, I shall give you a second chance and hope you will learn your lesson and treat Teddies with more consideration in future …...... tee hee! :))

i have but one question …......................pooh ate all the chocolate …..............the mystery continues

  • catblack

    catblack, 2 months ago

    i looooooooove it
the dude on the left is so brainy, i can tell.. the other one is insecure and wants some chocolate
but brainy wont offer. insecurey is too shy to ask
so he’s putting a neglected face to see if he’ll be noticed.

the spider web that they r caught in doesnt alarm them at all bcos they have chocolate.
    it fixes everything.

I never had a teddy. But I did have chocolates!

  • BLYTHART

BLYTHART in reply to Firedrake’s comment, 2 months ago

.... how sad … you can’t cuddle chocolates … well, okay, you can .. but they’d make an awful mess of the sheets :))

  • Firedrake

    Firedrake, 2 months ago

I’m going to get some and try! That might earn me a disapproving look from the walrus though :)

You can live without Teddies, but life is not worth living without chocolate …

  • BLYTHART

BLYTHART in reply to tomg’s comment, 2 months ago

    Teddies are non-fattening.

  • BLYTHART

BLYTHART in reply to Firedrake’s comment, 2 months ago

The male population of Redbubble is gallantly trying to resist those inevitable mental images of Kaitlin covered in melting chocolate …. Does the walrus have a digicam? :) Oh, behave yourself Dave!

  • BLYTHART

BLYTHART in reply to catblack’s comment, 2 months ago

Insecurey feels all self-conscious now that you have successfully analysed him and uncovered his motives. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if he were to steal a chocolate; the box is still full. Incidentally, have you noticed how the one with the chocolates is a wee bit plumper?

Your going soft in your old age Dave !

    ;)

  • BLYTHART

BLYTHART in reply to Andy Mercer’s comment, 2 months ago

I’ve always been soft, Andy, but hey, read the comments … this has been cathartic …. Matt’s indulging in fantasies about dismembered teddies, Catblack has psychoanalysed one of them, Firedrake is considering having a bedbath with melted chocolate and Tom is contemplating suicide as soon as the chocolate supplies run out …. I have started something here I think ….

Your Teds remind me of when I used to get paid for working – little checks. Glad you put those shadows in,together with the curves around the suffing,to give that 3rd dimension Dave. Now your Teds have real form. I skipped Teds and went straight onto Barbie dolls.

  • BLYTHART

BLYTHART in reply to Brian Towers’s comment, 2 months ago

Brian, hearing that you skipped Teds and went straight onto Barbie dolls sort of fits in with the comments this picture has invited. Would anyone like to confess to a murder or two while we are all in the mood :)) Knowing you are a manly sort of man, I must assure our readers that it was the Ken dolls you preferred, as you could dress them up as soldiers and fire guns at them :)) The Barbie dolls were too busy preparing a light lunch for after the shooting sessions.

I’ve never seen a proper photo of you, but I’d say you had tons of chocolate to eat before you became anywhere near to plump … just be warned though … I used to be slim once; now I am 14 stone! :))

How could anyone bin a teddy????? THAT should go in a report somehwere. And there is a perfecty good reason why they don’t have real feet – they don’t walk anywhere. When teddies need to get from one place to another they have human freinds to carry them. Everyone knows that. Catblack gave a very good analysis xx. I had a teddy called Solomon Ambrose once….he was extremely wise (as you can tell by his name). Tragically he was lost in a fire…he has had many replacements since, but never one with his quixotic personality. My daughter Cressida had a teddy called Pommie Ted (for obvious reasons) for her first birthday – and he still sits on her bed at 32. Your teddies Dave, are just gorgeously drawn and thats why they are drawing people in from all over the bubble. Thanks for looking at my teddy by the way.

  • BLYTHART

    BLYTHART, 2 months ago

I don’t have a teddy any more, but I cuddle our cat instead as he is ginger and has soft fur like a teddy bear. By the way I am not really mentally unstable, just in case all this talk of teddies is worrying anyone :))

I like the way that you have used different patterns for the couch background and the bears. I like the way that the warm colours on the bears cause them to stand out from the background that is made up of cool colours. I have a teddy that wears an artists smock and has a beray on and holds a artist palet and a paint brush I really love him
