Having delivered his Sermon on the Mount to the multitude, Jesus then turned to his disciples, whom he would soon be sending out by twos to preach his gospel in the regions round about and briefed them about how they were to conduct themselves and sustain themselves, while on this mission, as they would be unable to exercise their trade of fishermen. They presumably looked unsure about how they would survive economically, so he said, among other things, the following words:-
*"Consider the lilies of the field; how they grow; They toil not, neither do they spin. And yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these." *
“Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?”
The reigns of David and his son, Solomon, are generally regarded as being the Golden Age of the Jewish people. So great was the wealth that was accumulated during the reign of Solomon that silver ceased to be regarded as a precious metal!
Solomon was noted for his great wisdom and also for the spectacular throne upon which he sat. Unfortunately, Solomon fell from grace during the latter end of his reign.
I have chosen a picture of Asiatic lilies, which were growing in our garden this summer past to illustrate the text and put it in a double mirrored frame.
