Captured in the village of Southminster, Essex, with my Canon PowerShot S3 IS camera, a black cat called “Shadow”. Her owner was not in agreement initially, but fortunately relented. I am sure that I could have taken better shots, if she had not been breathing down my neck, though!

My life is divided between teaching Music and Photography. The instruments I play are organ, piano, clarinet and saxophone. I taught German and Spanish before my retirement, but since I got my digital camera no longer have time for them!

Great photo of a gorgeous black kitty!

  • Thank you, Stephen. I think the owner must have thought that I was going to “catnap” her!

Lovely cat…how odd her owner was cross. Most people I’ve met seem flattered I want to shoot their furbabies and I give them a card and offer to send them a digital copy via email if they contact me. I have a fledgling pet photo business starting…slowly… :0) I had a bad experience with a creepy guy last summer though. I was on the sidewalk and pasding a school. I never shoot kids without parents consent….but I saw a big bike leaning on a tree. No people but great shadows. Got a couple of shots and headed along.
Mr. Creepy chased me down demanding to know why I shot his bike. My german shepherd Keala got concerned…I told him I liked the shadow of it and asked him what he was so upset about. ?
He was really strangly angry. I was in a public place but he didn’t strike me as a mental giant so I scrolled thru my display and told him I had deleted it.
    Some people are odd.
    cheers!

  • Thank you, Leigh. I have had a few unpleasant experiences too. It could well be that this guy was a bit short of the grey matter or he could even have been a paedophile and was worried that his bike might identify him. On one occasion I was picked on by a man, while I was photographing a rose in a public park. He asked me, if I had never seen a flower before. I felt like telling him that I would rather photograph a beautiful flower than an ugly old man, but, as he was nearly a foot taller than me and I was on my own, I had to bite my tongue. Of course, if my husband or son had been with me, he would not have dared approach me, as my son was the same height as him, a lot younger and fitter, and built like a rugby quarterback!

I had another time I broke my rule about not shooting kids. I was walking across the street and this darling little girl was heading alone tward the school. A guy was biking coming tward her and stopped to talk to her. I have excellent hearing and it didn’t sound like she knew him and he sounded too friendly. I had on my 300mm and started shooting them. He noticed and started glaring daggers at me. He got back on the bike and peddled off and I crossed over and tailed her to school. It made my hackles go up and I trust my instincts. He may have been harmless but maybe not…

  • You did the right thing, Leigh. You may have saved that little girl from appalling abuse. A pity that you did not think to show the picture to the Head Teacher, who could have alerted the parents. There are some dreadful crimes committed against children and, as I said earlier, the perpetrators have usually “honed their skills” on helpless animals before they start on human victims. It’s a good job that you had a sizable K9 with you or he might have got physical!
