Echo of a Distant Drum

Can you hear the echo of a distant land?
Of wilderness and contrast, of mountains, sea and sand.
The blazing of a fire, a raging flood.
No matter what went wrong, the echo still goes on.

Can you hear the echo of a distant drum?
From different coloured people, over this land they had won.
A paradise for all, a war of peace.
No matter what went wrong, the echo sings its song.

Can you hear the echo of a distant time?
Of pioneers on horseback, or down a dreary mine.
The pounding of a whip through hearts of stone.
No matter what went wrong, the echo still goes on.

Now do you hear the echo of a distant drum?
It calls out every name, but only reaches some.
Can you hear it summoning you now?
The echo must be strong, will always carry on.

Artist's Description

This was written as a poem, with music added later to form a song.

With Australia Day having just passed, this is a time to reflect on our history – the Aborigines, the convicts and the European pioneers.
It is also a time to look into the future and decide what part each of us will play in shaping our land and this great nation.
