Starfish - the Carpet Sea Star (Patiriella calcar) by

As a kid, I loved exploring rock pools and finding all kinds of weird creatures. My favourite were the starfish. I don’t see as many these days.

Patiriella calcar, commonly known as Carpet Sea Star or Cushion Sea Star or Eight-armed Sea Star, is an Australian species of sea star.

This colourful critter was captured in a rock pool at Maroubra near Sydney, NSW, Australia.

I live in Australia and enjoy bushwalking in the great outdoors, especially the world heritage listed Blue Mountains National Park.

My photographic interests are pretty much related to Australian landscapes, rustic Australia, historic Australia, Australian wildlife, flora, fauna, birds, etc. Guess I love the country I was born and live in.

Very colourful Michael and unlike any I have ever seen. As you say there don’t seem to be as many these days … it is rare to find one for my grandchildren to see :(

  • Yes, there were a whole lot in one rockpool. Was great to see.
