The 3801

Michael John

Oatley, Australia

Artist's Description

3801 (pronounced Thirty-eight o-one) is Australia’s best known and most widely travelled steam locomotive.

Built in 1943, this streamlined locomotive was designed to haul express trains such as the Newcastle Flyer and Melbourne Limited for the New South Wales Government Railways (NSWGR). The train was restored during the 1980s. 3801 is now recognised by the Heritage Council and Institution of Engineering as a heritage icon.

As a child, I remember travelling down to the south coast on a steam train. Today it is a real treat to re-visit those days of old on a steam-train ride.

Captured near Robertson, NSW, Australia.
Pentax K1000 film camera, as is.
Thanks to Brian.
