This is an Official Australian Flag which very few Australians would ever have seen.
It is an historical flag designated specifically for an Australian River, and can only be flown on it.
It is the Murray River Flag – the only flag in the world named in honour of a river.
This flag dates from the 1850s and is flown by vessels on the upper reaches of the Murray River, predominantly in Victoria.
It consists of the British White Ensign, featuring the cross in red with five white stars (representing the then five colonies). The blue bars are said to represent the four major rivers that form the Murray-Darling River system.
Captured on the Murray River near Lock 11, Mildura, Vic/NSW, Australia.
Canon 400D, as is.

Huh… I never knew it existed. Thank you for making it known.
Great shot. Flags aren’t the easiest things to capture. :)
No – it kept flapping around (naturally). Thanks for commenting and for the fave Donna.

I knew that ! I have seen it lots of times on the Murray River Paddleboats. Mildura is such a lovely spot along the river, as is Echuca and the Barmah forest… gorgeous. I feel like a BLT from the corner pub at Echuca right now to take down to paddlesteamer park and watch the steamers float by… heaven ! Gotta get to that part of the country again, thanks for the memory Michael :)
Pleased to have brought back those great memories Penny. It sure is a nice, relaxed part of the world.

Very interesting. I would have guessed it was a kind of navy flag. Thanks teacher.

Great capture, It is strange that they have an upper and lower river flag.
Yes, and there seems to be some confusion between the two. Apparently there are a few other varieties as well!
