Artist's Description

Gun at Fort Scratchley. This 6 inch Mark VII Breech Loading (B.L.) Gun was installed 1910-11 and helped to protect Newcastle during both World Wars. On the morning of 8 June 1942, it was used to fight off a Japanese Submarine attacking Newcastle.

Fort Scratchley is a former coastal defence installation and now museum, located in Newcastle East, NSW, Australia.

The Fort was built in 1882 to defend the city against a possible Russian attack. After the Australian Army left the site in 1972 the buildings and guns were restored.

Canon, 400D, as is.
