This surreal landscape, known as the ‘petrified forest’, looks like a forest of tree roots turned into rock.
It was long believed that this petrified forest was formed when an ancient forest of Moonah trees was smothered by a large sand dune. Water seeping through the sand formed a crust of sandstone on the outside of the trunks, decaying the organic matter, leaving behind large petrified trunks.
A more recent theory suggests that they are hollow tubes of limestone, eroded as a result of millions of years of rainfall.
