These magnificent limestone formations are part of the Lucas Cave within the Jenolan Caves system.
To the right can be seen an old metal ladder, perhaps dating back to when guided tours first began during the 1860s.
The Jenolan Caves are the most celebrated of Australia’s limestone caves and are the oldest discovered open caves in the world. They include numerous Silurian marine fossils of great interest and the calcite formations, sometimes pure white, are of extraordinary beauty. The cave network is enormous, over 40 km of multi-level passages, still undergoing active exploration.
The Jenolan Caves Reserve is World Heritage listed.
