The Weight of the World

Michael John

Oatley, Australia

Artist's Description

This old statue of Atlas was captured beside Tebbutt’s Observatory. John Tebbutt was a pioneer in the field of astronomy.
In Greek mythology, Atlas was the primordial Titan who supported the heavens.
Atlas is still used as a symbol of strength or stoic endurance. He is often shown kneeling on one knee while supporting an enormous round globe on his back and shoulders. The globe originally represented the celestial sphere of ancient astronomy, rather than the earth.
Windsor, NSW, Australia.
Canon 400D.
