The rarely seen Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo (Lophochroa leadbeateri), also known as Leadbeater’s Cockatoo or Pink Cockatoo, is a medium-sized cockatoo restricted to arid and semi-arid inland areas of Australia.

With its soft-textured white and salmon-pink plumage and large, bright red and yellow crest, it is generally recognised as the most beautiful of all cockatoos.

It is named in honour of Major Sir Thomas Mitchell, who wrote “Few birds more enliven the monotonous hues of the Australian forest than this beautiful species whose pink-coloured wings and flowing crest might have embellished the air of a more voluptuous region”.

I live in Australia and enjoy bushwalking in the great outdoors, especially the world heritage listed Blue Mountains National Park.

My photographic interests are pretty much related to Australian landscapes, rustic Australia, historic Australia, Australian wildlife, flora, fauna, birds, etc. Guess I love the country I was born and live in.

Terrific photo Michael – a very beautiful bird. In colour he is very much like the pink and grey Galah that we know so well over here. The major differences seem to be in their eyes and the tops of their heads.
    Best wishes
    Peter

  • Yes, they are similar but they also have a larger comb. Thanks for commenting Pete.
