Artist's Description

A solitary, lone figure stands upon this massive sand dune at Lake Mungo.

The lake began to dry up 25,000 years ago and over the following 10,000 years formed sand dunes 9lunettes), 30km long along the eastern edge.

There is evidence of human habitation of the area around Lake Mungo that is as much as 50,000 years old.

In 1981 Mungo was named as Australia’s first World Heritage site. The lake is the central feature of Mungo National Park, and is one of seventeen lakes in the World Heritage listed Willandra Lakes Region.
