You turn right over to the TV page by

We seem to be ever increasingly more social with the proliferation of social website such as Facebook yet those interactions are always through the internet veil. Even gathering around the family tellie is a thing of the past, family members content to bathe in the glow of their own iPhone or laptop. And who hasn’t seen the couple sharing a coffee in a cafe more foccused on checking their text messages than conversing with each other.

This is a bit of an experiment and a work in progress, the image is a collage of many of my own various different stock images. I was looking for a run-down building which would illustrate the theme or feeling of isolation, especially in cities when we seem surrounded by people. I couldn’t find the building I had pictured in my mind so I decided to construct one of my own :)

(the title comes from a Crowded House song)

excellent, reminds me of the scene in Fahrenheit 451 where they notice the only house without a TV aerial as belonging to those who read books… and here we are socialising in isolation ((like we had to watch the Tribe individually on iView, to catch up because of real life social commitments which defeated the point, because the whole point of watching the Tribe, was that it was fun shared with the whole family, sheer hilarity)
I like the idea of the building, and at night when you go for a walk you see lights flickering in various windows, and the glow of screens. Perhaps add different light to some windows? An onlooker suggested that the building does not need to be so tall compositionally.
Neat reference to Finn lyric also :)

  • Love reading your thoughts Naia. I’d never heard of Fahrenheit 451, bit now I want to see/read it having read some background info on it, hmm censoring information/suppressing literature, now where have I heard of that recently, oh yes the proposed government intenrnet filter. I had thought I would add some more light but I was trying to get across the idea of isolation, same reason why the building is tall and skiny and by itself, but your onlooker is right it doesn’t feel right compositionally. The original idea was one single light in a sea of windows but to be honest each window is a separate image and my poor PC was grunting and groaning with the file size :) But as I say it’s a work in progress and I really do appreciate the feedback, I wish more people gave CC, thanks again Naia

I love this – great concept and execution jus – couldn’t agree more, we live in a society with more social applications than ever before, but increasingly people hide behind them. Face to face social skills are slipping away. Outstanding piece :)

  • Thank you Trish for such a wonderful comment, I really do appreciate the feedback, this is a bit of a new direction for me and my PS skills aren’t great so I’m really thrilled that you like it

brilliant concept and image Jus… you did a fantastic job on this… wot about a bit of a lean on the building..? Nah… it needs to be straight and narrow and tunnel-visioned, just as you’ve done it and in keeping with your theme – love what you’ve done

  • Thanks for the wonderful feedback Carol, actually a bit of a lean would be just perfect (if I knew how :P ), I loved what you did in “mr crumbles corner shop”, I guess this is still a work in progress, thanks again I really do appreciate it belive me
