Playing around with bokeh again.
I know this is a bit of a cliche but I was intrigued to see if it would work.
First off you need a relatively fast lens, I used my trusty Canon EF 50mm f/1.8mm.
To make the hearts (or any simple shape) you then need to make a “hood” to cover then end of the lens, I made mine out of plain black card. I then cut out the heart shape in the middle, make sure the actual size is < about 20mm, (there is a rule to do with focal lengths governing this but I can’t remember it). I’ve enclosed a pic below of the one I made :)
Open the aperture as wide as possible and find any point source of light for the background (I used chrissy lights), focus on something close to the lens and snap away.
There is a decent tute here if you need further info

wow…this is fascinating…. I love the bokeh effects in some of the shots I get with my nikon (18-200mm lens at full zoom) … especially out in nature. So thank you for sharing this Jus…

  • Thanks Wendy…really great to hear from you
Yup nature gives the best bokeh, much nicer than sitting in the dark going blind from looking at chrissy lights :P

wow! i just thought you’d fallen in love, Jus!! this is really cleer and fun – thanks for explaining…

  • lol…no, although that would be nice :)
It’s just a bit of fun and I kept seeing these shaped bokeh pics and couldn’t believe it could be achieved with such old-school techniques, lots of clever digital technology and it all comes down to a bit of black card and duct tape :)

  • Thanks so much Ell, I must admit it was a bit of fun, you may have to get an adult if you’re going to use scissors :P (I did lol)
And I really am sorry for the late reply

I presume it is possible to put any shape in the lense cover, provided it is central and the same width? The mind boggles. HAHA

  • Yup, you can make any shape, the maximum width for a 50mm lens is about 20mm, there’s a rule of thumb for the ratio but I can’t recall what it is, if you google it I’m sure you could find it, have a go it’s a bit of fun, thanks again Ben
