Freo Prison by blueeyesjus

Available to buy on…

A few years back I worked with a bunch of other people including archeologists, historians etc. on restoring some select cells at Fremantle Prison in Perth, Western Australia. It was quite extraordinary the things we found including hand written letters from cell mates long past. This was the view from one of the cells.

Love it..very sad and lonely feel to it.

  • Thanks Kim, these were the original convict cells and it’s hard to convey just how small they were, I was there at night some times and trust me it was not a happy place to be, thanks again you are always so supportive..

Great shot Jus! I like how you have captured the light and shadows. And what an interesting project to work on :)

  • Thanks Shell, I found it really hard to convey just how claustrophobic the cells were with those heavy limestone walls, it was fun to work on though I must admit if not bloody spooky at times lol

Wonderful! Communicates darkness and despair but also hope.

  • Thank you so much Christine, I never saw hope but you are so right, the light spilling in does envoke that feeling, I love it when others see things I don’t so thank you for that

What an awesome capture mate, love the framing here. The high contrast is awesome, really shows up the need to escape into that light, but an inability to. There’s a strong sense of claustrophobia here, excellent work my friend!!

  • Thanks mate, as always a wonderfully detailed and thoughful comment from you which is always so appreciated, if it wasn’f for people like yourself I think I would have given up photography so it means the world to me that I have your support and encouragement. I was actually going to overlay the floor plans onto the image just to give the viewer an idea of just how tiny these cells are but I’m not great at layering (unlike yourself) and my previous attempts have looked worse than a dropped pie :)
