Nostalgia Of A Non Existent Moment
I feel so out of place all the time, well almost all the time, depends who you’re with. I feel like I should have been this age i am now but either in the year 3000 or higher, or some time in the mid 60’s, then die around a decade later. I’m just trapped in this strangers body, in this strangers world, in this strangers time…
Ever feel nostalgic about the past before the past has even past?

The shot is a little busy, but i like it, an array of the history that shapes this world, some of my favourite records/bands/artists (well of the few that i own) are the ones with the vinyls showing, and the #1 favourtie being played.
(oh, and the spiked up Mohawk was just for fun)

Brilliant. Very thoughtful narrative as well. We often wax nostalgic for times we’ve never known, places we’ve never been to. Perhaps that’s why nostalgia is so sweet, unburdened as it so often is by the harshness of reality.
Daniel Angeles replied
Quite true. Although not all nostalgia is so sweet, and neither is all nostalgia of sweet moments.

You have an interesting mind Daniel. And like the BEST hair ever lol! Great set up here. It really works well with your words and vice versa :)
Daniel Angeles replied
I’m tempted to chop it all off for the fun of it, but then i would be annoyed because i can’t do things like this with it then….

I was alive and well then (well not during the Elvis time). I an absolutely recall with some clarity what it felt like to open the cellophane on new albums and how many times it played and replayed certain tracks. Finally the green, white and orange label on the record brings back plenty of memories. You might like to look at John Linton’s work posted here and on JPGmag. His 365 day series relates well to the time period you wrote about.
I enjoy living at the moment. The end of the 60s and early 70s were great. So too are the tens? Yikes that sounds odd. Perhaps it is because I teach and so I am always in the throw of a new time and privileged to learn of it alongside so many fine, young people.
I love your work. The mohawk and sneakers are perfect. Looking forward to seeing more of the series.
Daniel Angeles replied
well the 10’s havent started yet, lets hope for a decent decade.
and thanks a bunch

How many times have I laid sprawled in my record collection? You have some great ones. I know how it is to feel that maybe this is not the time to be Being, and have been wistful for a different time. But we are where we are.
Nice piece.
Daniel Angeles replied
we sure are but that doesn’t mean its any good.
over half are my dads that i now claim as my own, he has some good ones but also a whole lot of terrible ones, so i tried to keep them at the bottom.
thanks tama

Such a great comment – I know how you feel – I was a bit too young to fully participate in the 60s. I was raised in San Francisco, and I was DYING to be a hippie and live in SF and tune in, turn on, and drop out. I managed to do some of it but was about 8 yrs too young to be in the middle of it like my older sisters… So, yes, I know how you feel.
Daniel Angeles replied
what a shame, would have been so soo good to live there and then.

PS- My record collection was my pride and joy. I wish I still had it. Sold most of it in Berkeley in the 70s…. booo.

I feel like I belong in the past that’s for sure. my sense of fashion and love of music is all from before I was born! It takes a very very special new release song for me to stand up and take notice and like it (last one I remember looking up and away from the old stuff was this. Everything else on my pc and ipod is old school rock ‘n’ roll. John Lennon being the all time fave!
I can completely relate.
This is my all time fave Zep
Daniel Angeles replied
Thats the way is one of, if not, my favourtie, great taste…. it appears in one of the best movies ever.
I mix and match, favourite of all time is Elliott Smith (boy its hard to choose a song to show of his, too many brilliant ones)
Pip Gerard
try that again

I guess what I meant was that we can be nostalgic and wistful all we want, but since we are where we are, why not make it the time to be in? Make the best of it? You know.
Time has a way of romanticizing the past. Some of being a hippie was fun, but no more fun than we can have now doing something else. It’s really all about expanding yourself and exploring, which can be done anywhere, any time.
Good topic!
Daniel Angeles replied
yeah i understand that it wasn’t all fun and games, it was still life and no matter what time you are in, life has its ups and downs, its just the culture thing was so much better, especially for youth and young adults, right now its terribly tragic how shit it is, mainly the music which is a very importnat part in shaping culture, today there is nothing worse than what is popular and being played on the radio and as a result of that you get this young culture that…. well its shit and i hate it….
Tama Blough
I have to agree with you there on the music – now and then there is a gem in the midst of the rubble but R&B/rap/hip-hop especially has been suffering from a lack of forward motion and creativity for a couple of decades. But if you dig, there is still decent and interesting stuff. Plus we have 40 years of great music to mine from – in the 60’s we only had a few years worth!
Daniel Angeles replied
what has become whats annoying is that having excellent creative music doesn’t help you to become big and successful, its all about being commercial, some simple shitty beats and boring over used chords with crappy lyrics as long as it has a catchy melody, but the song can’t have depth, thats what people like, pop music…. whats good though is there are plenty of people who appreciate good bands and artists and you find them everywhere, just not on the popular radio stations.
Pip Gerard
you’re not referring to this one (I’ve almost worn out that DVD)
Daniel Angeles replied
Sure am, i know ey, its the best
Pip Gerard
Elliot Smith is impressive with the lyrics that’s for sure.
Daniel Angeles replied
yeah, he is a lyrical mastermind, but i am in love with his songs, he uses such genius and interesting chords, plus he is one of the only people where i love almost every song, and he has a shit load…. but thats just me
TAHill
Love it..great title, and thoughts, love the room of tunes too…Atlantic Records label on the turntable, and Zeppelin II cover..YES..that’s golden..Live Beatles in 62 in Germany..wow..lot’s of tabs of speed for the boys..Is the recording quality decent on that?? really great image here Daniel..tah

I have a forum on 60’s GLORY about work vs. play in doing our Art called Chironisation. But its also an attempt to discuss dissociative states of working with spirit soul issues to express this relationship with ourselves as a way of life . I ‘d love to hear your views if you are prepared to share with this groups members. You have some great work.
