The Frustrated Artist
The Irony was not lost on me with this one. this was by far the most frustrating thing I have ever created.
I had envisioned a completely different shot to this when i came up with the concept. But it just wouldn’t work, no matter what i did it just would not co-operate and work out how it should. I tried everything to get what i wanted, i couldn’t get the perspective right, i couldn’t get the framing right, i couldn’t get the composition right, the hair and wardrobe didn’t look how it should, Strongest hair gel you can get my ass… it was all so fucking frustrating… once i got sick of trying and failing and wanting to put the axe through my camera and head, i decided to go a completely different route, this is that route…. I do like this shot though, its quite different than what i had in mind, but it works. One day i will do it again, and it will work…. it better…
.
I’m sure many of you can relate to this idea, this isn’t just a reflection of Artist against their Art, the art is our world, and we get so frustrated when it doesn’t work out, lately I have been feeling quite down and out over events and thoughts I’ve been thinking about non stop, so i decided to make this…

I think this is brilliant Dan, and really glad that it was so difficult to achieve – isn’t that the whole point of it? Well done, its an excellent image with heaps of power :-)
Daniel Angeles replied
It was meant to be a fairly simple and easy shot…. so i am definitely not glad it was difficult… My intention was to portray the Frustrated Artist not to become one, ha… Thanks Trish
Jordan Busson
Real brilliant. I think we can all relate to this.
Trish O'Brien
lol, then you really did just become a true artist Dan ;-)
Tracey Mac
The Shining, except you look better than Jack…............even though it’s not what you were trying for, I think it’s brilliant. I love how your veins are all pumped up, so you must have been feeling a lot of frustration, or just holding that axe tighter than tight…..........can’t wait to see the next instalment if this one’s anything to go by!
Oh, and the fact that your eye is bulging also makes this so realistic :)
Daniel Angeles replied
Jack Nicholson now, or jack Nicholson back in the day?... ha
My veins are quite large in this i must say, works quite well though.
Thanks Tracey
Pip Gerard
glad you persevered.

WOW .. powerful shot

I think the piece works very well. And, it recalls the days in my 20’s when I took a whole barrel full of high school sketches and burned them. What a jerk I was. So, I know the consequences of this and other similar destructive feelings. The piece is a very good portrayal of the mood.
Mindy McGregor
Great self portrait, love the concept!
Sarah Moore
So glad that I was away this weekend!! :) That would have been a scary sight…
Daniel Angeles replied
you would have loved it…. you should have seen me today, it was so awesome, i didn’t want to get rid of what i had done to myself, i’ll have to do it more often…. boy i looked good… my shots didnt work, but i didn’t care because i looked so awesome…. so so awesome….
I guess you didn’t end up going where i thought you were going today, i’m glad if thats the case.
Barbara Glatzeder
Yup, my first thought was Nicholson, too … but then I realised it’s Barrie ;-))) Great shot and happy for every minute I don’t feel like that. (had a good giggle about your comment re. wanting to portray and not become) x

ah, story of my life .. this is super cool .. awesome work mate
parmi
Ahh mate, so many nights has this manifested within. Went through a phase of this last month, I feel this. I love the sheer madness to this, total momentary loss of touch with reality, rush of emotion and energy in it. Seems like you have had your back turned on the painting (which is strangely fitting in its look), picked up the axe and have just let that crazy scream out as u spin and wield it.. I’m getting carried away haha.. Love this!
Daniel Angeles replied
It depicts a frozen moment in time, where the artist has just walked over to pick up the hidden axe, and this is the split second before he turns to unleash all hell on the failed artwork that taunts him so.
Glad you love it
Anne McGinn
OMG – you made my day!!! This is just how I’ve been feeling lately with my art.. apparently many of us can relate, of course. I want to pick up my computer and just throw against the wall as hard as I can whilst screaming obscenities…. well done, mate. You are much cuter than Jack ever was…
Daniel Angeles replied
I dunno, he was quite the stud back in the day, like the 70’s or even earlier…
Thanks heaps
Wayne Pearson
