Fenced – View to Ackerman’s Cottage – Hill End, New South Wales, Australia.

The cottage was built by the Ackerman family in 1857, and is one of the oldest on display during Open Day. It is still lived in today by a 5th generation member of the Ackerman family.

Ackerman’s Cottage is a carefully restored miners cottage in the Germantown section of the village. In Hill End’s heyday of the 1870’s, vineyards once grew in the large front paddock of the property and the orchard is still evident out back.

Heritage Council of New South Wales

By mid 1851, alluvial gold was first found in the Hill End goldfields. The population of Hill End exploded following these early discoveries and, by the second rush in 1872, it was the largest inland settlement in the NSW colony. One of the most remarkable things about Hill End now is the virtual lack of development since the gold rush with almost all of the buildings dating back to the boom years around 1872 and it is this unique collection of buildings, relics, artefacts, structures, archaeological sites and landscape elements which are, individually and collectively, of outstanding architectural, aesthetic and research value.
